Voice is the feature AI girlfriend apps are least likely to give away. This page looks only at what you can hear and say without paying: real-time calls, spoken replies and voice messages on free plans. We used official help centers, plan pages and store listings, and did not test the apps. What Counts as Free Voice

Apps use "voice" for several different things, and only some of them are free anywhere:

• Real-time calls: you speak, the character answers aloud, hands-free.
• Voice replies: the character's text answer is read out in its voice.
• Voice messages from you: you record a clip, the app transcribes it.
• Custom voices: a voice designed or cloned from an audio sample.

We ranked apps by what kind of voice is free (calls before replies), whether it lasts or runs out, whether limits are published, and what the free plan costs in other ways, such as ads. One-time credits count as a preview, not a free plan.

Character.AI is the only app we track that documents free real-time calls. Its Help Center says "Character Voice is available to all users, free of charge", and Character Calls, two-way voice conversations, work on mobile and the web in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin "and more". Each call's transcript is saved as a text chat, and no minute cap is published. The Google Play listing sums it up as "unlimited AI conversations and voice calls - all for free".

The free plan has costs of its own: banner and interstitial ads, slow mode when servers are busy, and no adult content for anyone, by voice or text. Character Technologies filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026, and says the platform will be wound down if no bid keeps it running. CrushOn.AI's official wiki describes voice messages both ways: hold to record, your message is transcribed and sent as audio, text or both, and the character answers in its own voice, with auto-play and text-to-speech playback on every reply. The pricing page lists voice messages and "unlimited AI voice replies" on every tier, Free included, and the free plan has one custom voice slot for a voice cloned from about 30 seconds of audio (private use, with a consent checkbox).

Two gaps: the pricing page does not say whether free voice replies spend your 100 monthly message credits, and there are no real-time calls on any plan. Recordings you send are deleted after 24 hours, per the wiki, while free chat history is deleted after 7 days without activity. Adult chat is available on the free plan through the Unfiltered switch. Kindroid has no free plan since October 1, 2026, but its one-time preview for new accounts includes 5,000 audio credits alongside 50 messages and 5 selfies. Voice replies cost 1 credit per character with V2 voices (1.5 times that for V3, 1.75 times for V4), so the preview covers roughly 5,000 characters of V2 voice. Calls are not part of it: they need a subscription or the 3-day trial, which requires a payment method and converts to a paid plan unless you cancel.

After the preview the account turns read-only, though you can still play back what you have. The US App Store lists the subscription at $15.99 a month, with monthly audio credits included. See our Kindroid review or how Kindroid's free plan ended.

Muah AI's chatroom supports voice messages with a transcript, "Gen Voice" read-aloud in a voice you choose, and a live "Call" "if your account has access". Its guide says free chat "can have guest prompts, message limits, photo-generation quotas, photo-viewing locks, or call allowances", which suggests some free voice, but no number is published. ULTRA VIP is the tier described as "Real-time phone call access", and prices appear only after login.

Voice that may be free, but is not documented

• Talkie: its privacy policy covers "voice and text messages", and free use is ad-supported, but no voice limits are published. Strictly SFW.
• Chai: the store listing promises characters with "authentic voices", with no details on plans or limits.
• EVA AI: its Terms describe chat "via text, voice, and (where available) video call interface"; what the free Basic tier includes is not published.
• Paradot: the Terms describe "a text and voice interface"; free limits are not published, and a July 2026 Google Play reviewer said voice clips went unanswered (user report).
• Romantic AI: the Terms say "audio generations" are bought with Hearts; how many Hearts a free account gets is not published.
• GirlfriendGPT: the FAQ says companions send voice messages, but the free tier itself is tiny (an example of 10 to 20 messages in total).

Where Voice Sits on Every Plan

Free vs Paid Voice

The pattern is clear: free plans cover text, and voice is metered. Kindroid charges 400 audio credits a minute for calls plus the voice cost, DreamGF 7 tokens a minute, Candy AI tokens per use, and Kupid AI sells weekly voice minutes. Nomi is the opposite on a paid plan: its in-house and custom voices have unlimited use. Limits of Free Voice

• No published minutes: Character.AI gives no minute cap, so how much free calling you get at busy times is unknown; free accounts can hit slow mode.
• One-way voice: Character.AI's older FAQ describes Character Voice as the character speaking, in one-to-one chats only; calls are the two-way option.
• Credits may apply: CrushOn.AI's pricing page offers "up to 70% off on PRO voice generation", which implies some voice output uses a paid allowance.
• Content rules carry over: a call follows the same rules as text, so Character.AI's free calls stay SFW.
• Stability: Character.AI's sale is expected to finish in late November or early December 2026; free voice could change if a buyer changes the product.

Your Voice and Privacy

A recording of your voice is personal data, and the free options handle it differently. Character.AI's privacy policy lists voice recordings among the data it collects when you use voice features, and its Help Center says it retains certain data to help train its models, with an opt-out documented for EEA and UK users. CrushOn.AI's wiki says voice recordings you send are deleted after 24 hours, and its cloning feature is for private use with a consent checkbox. Kindroid's help center mentions an unnamed voice provider.
