Most people do not leave an AI companion app because of one bad reply. They leave when something changes: Kindroid retired its free messaging on October 1, 2026, SpicyChat raised every plan on September 8, 2026, and Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 and says it will be wound down if no buyer keeps it running. Others leave over content rules, like a ban on adult content or nude images, or over prices that only appear inside the app.
That is why each alternatives page here starts from one app and from what its users actually want. A Character.AI user usually wants characters and roleplay, a Replika user a gentle companion with an avatar, a Kindroid user customization and voice. The picks, their order and their labels ("best free alternative", "best for voice", "best for memory") differ from page to page, and every label rests on facts we can point to: official pricing and help pages, policies and US store listings. Before you switch, three habits save trouble. Export your chats if the app offers it (Character.AI and Kindroid do; Replika and Nomi do not document an export). Cancel in the store or on the website where you pay, because deleting an app does not cancel a subscription.
