Quick answer
- Three apps document a chat export: Character.AI (Export data in account settings), Kindroid (Export data, available every 30 days) and Muah AI (Export Chat as PNG or HTML, plus a .muah backup).
- Talkie's Export Data page does not include chats, only email address, username, gender and age.
- For everyone else, the route is a data access or portability request under GDPR or the CCPA.
- Exports are backups, not transfers: we found no app that documents importing another app's export.
- Export before you cancel, delete or when an app is sold, since access can end.
- Check the table below for your app's export tool or request route.
- Character.AI: on the web, Profile, Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Export data. On mobile, the settings icon, then Export my data.
- Kindroid: Profile, Preferences, Account privacy, Export data. You can export once every 30 days, and read-only accounts can still export.
- Muah AI: use Export Chat for a PNG or HTML copy of a conversation, or Download Data for a .muah backup.
- No tool? Send a data access or portability request to the privacy contact in the app's policy, and keep a note of the date.
This guide is part of our AI companion app guides. Menu paths come from help centers and policies; we did not create accounts or run exports, so we cannot describe file contents beyond what the apps document. If you plan to leave an app, export first, then follow how to delete an AI companion account.
How to Export AI Chat History: The Tools That Exist
Character.AI export
Character.AI has a help article titled "How do I export all my data? How can I export my chats?" with the two paths above, and its October 12, 2026 blog post repeats that users can export data in the app or on the website. The file format is not described in the sources we read. With the company in Chapter 11 and a sale pending (see the Chapter 11 news), exporting now is sensible.
Kindroid data export
Kindroid calls it a self-serve data export, available every 30 days from Profile, Preferences, Account privacy. This matters more since October 1, 2026, because accounts without a plan become read-only, and Kindroid says read-only accounts can still view, play back, export and delete everything. Chats and media are kept until you delete a specific Kindroid or the account.
Muah AI export chat and download data
Muah AI offers two things. Export Chat saves a conversation as a PNG or HTML file, and Download Data creates a .muah backup that can only be restored to the same account. Its guide notes that media may be referenced by URL rather than bundled, so check that images survive. A memory summary is also "not an archival backup", so export the chat itself.
Talkie exports account data only
Talkie's official Export Data page returns your email address, username, gender and age. It offers no chat transcript, so a request under privacy law is the only documented way to ask for more.

Request Your Chats Under Privacy Law
If there is no export button, a data access request is the lever. In the EU, the GDPR gives a right to access your data and a copy and a right to portability in a machine-readable format; the company must answer within one month, in principle without charge. California's CCPA gives residents a right to know what a business holds, which you can ask for twice a year free of charge. Our deletion guide explains both in plain words and has a request template: see legal data requests there. Ask specifically for "all chat messages, characters and memories linked to my account email, in a portable format", and send it from the account address.
Expect friction. An app may verify your identity, and some policies limit access rights to certain regions, as Anima's does for EEA users. Whether a request returns chats in a readable file is up to the company; none of the policies we read promises a format.
Moving Characters Between Apps
A chat export preserves a conversation, not a character. For characters, the community character card format stores a name, description, personality, scenario and greeting in a JSON file, often embedded in a PNG. SpicyChat imports Character.AI card files (JSON or PNG), and CrushOn.AI can import a character from another platform as JSON. Our glossary entry on the character card explains the format, and local vs cloud AI companions covers moving cards into local tools.
For apps with no export, copy your own text by hand: the backstory, personality and greeting you wrote, and any memory entries, for example from Nomi's Mind Map or Replika's Memory tab. As general advice, screenshot long memory lists before deleting.
When an App Shuts Down or Is Sold
Exports are time-limited. When the companion app Dot announced its shutdown in September 2025, it stayed online until October 5 so users could export data through "Request your data" in settings. Character.AI says it will be wound down if no buyer continues it. If an app you use has a sale or closure pending, export now and review what apps keep. To cancel a plan at the same time, see the cancellation guide.
FAQ
Can I export my chat history from Replika?
Replika documents no chat export. Its privacy policy says you can request a copy of your personal data ([email protected]), and the app shows only the past four months of chat history.
Does Nomi let you export chats?
We found no export feature in Nomi's wiki or privacy policy. You can edit memories in Mind Map 2.0, but a data request is the only documented way to ask for a copy.
How often can I export Kindroid data?
Once every 30 days, from Profile, Preferences, Account privacy, Export data. Read-only accounts can also export.
How do I export Character.AI chats?
On the web: Profile, Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Export data. On mobile: the settings icon, then Export my data.
Can I import an export into another AI companion app?
No app we checked documents importing another app's chat export. Muah AI's .muah backup restores only to the same account. Characters can move between some apps as character cards.
