Quick answer
- Chai is a mobile-only character chat app (iPhone and Android) where you talk to user-made AI characters or create your own. The web version is still "coming soon".
- It is strictly 18+, with age checks through Persona (selfie or ID). Its Safety Center now says the models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content.
- Free use is ad-supported in many regions, but Chai says some regions require a paid subscription.
- There is no official price page. The US App Store lists Premium at $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year and Ultra at $19.99 a week or $29.99 a month, without saying what each includes.
- Chats are used to fine-tune Chai's models, and data can be kept up to five years after you delete your account.
What Is Chai?
Chai is made by Chai Research Corp. of Palo Alto, California, founded in January 2021 according to its company facts page. It describes itself as a social AI platform to create, share and chat with AI characters, sold as "CHAI: Social AI Platform- Chat" on the App Store and "Chai: Chat AI Platform" on Google Play. The business runs on subscriptions, in-app purchases and advertising.
Chai says its models are trained in-house. Its news page (September 2026) describes post-training on open base models, naming DeepSeek V4 Pro, and the company reports running about 5,000 GPUs. It also reports more than 1 million daily users and $120 million in annualized revenue as of October 1, 2026; these are the company's own, unaudited figures. Our page on AI character chat apps compares similar platforms.
Who Is Chai For?
Going by official materials, Chai suits adults who want quick character chats on their phone, with a large community library and the option to make private or public characters, and who accept ads. It is a poor fit if you want to chat in a browser, want explicit roleplay, need clear prices and billing terms before paying, or live in a region where the free tier is closed. If you are looking for a long-term companion app instead, see our AI girlfriend app rankings.
How Chai Works
An account is required, and sign-up runs only through Google, Facebook or Apple. Chai then confirms you are an adult through Persona, using selfie age estimation or a government ID; in regions where the app stores verify age, users must be confirmed as adults before they can even download the app. After that you browse community characters, start a chat or create your own. You can report characters and messages anonymously and switch on safety filters.
Character Creation
The Google Play listing says "Character creation now open to everyone", with characters "kept entirely private or shared for everyone". The privacy policy confirms you can create chatbots and choose who sees them. Chai does not document the creation fields or any character limits, so we cannot say how detailed a persona can be. Our list of apps with custom characters covers platforms that document their creation tools.
Chat Quality
We did not chat with Chai ourselves, so this section reports official claims and labelled user reports. The store listing says its chatbots "think and reply like real characters". User reports on Google Play (2.3 out of 5 from about 794,000 reviews) are critical: reviewers in September 2026 say a recent update made "Pieces" (coins) necessary for chatting, mention roughly 120 free Pieces a day and a limit of 3 chats per character with chats deleted after 30 days, and complain about frequent ads and expensive plans. These are user claims, not Chai statements. A tech blog, PiunikaWeb, also reported in February 2026 that users saw chats freeze because of unannounced token limits. The US App Store average is 4.21 from 297,022 ratings. Reddit was not readable for our research.
Personality and Roleplay
Roleplay is Chai's core use. The EULA mentions "expansive, user-driven roleplay" and says users "may encounter or generate adult-oriented content, including mature themes and fictionalized violence", within the banned categories. Each character has its own personality and, per the store listing, "authentic voices". Group chats are not documented. Our best AI roleplay apps list compares platforms with more documented roleplay tools.
Memory, Voice and Images
Chai documents very little here. We found no official description of memory, so we cannot say how much a character remembers. The store listing promises characters "each with their own unique voice and personality", but voice details, limits and voice calls are not documented. Image and video generation are not documented either; the EULA bans "sexually explicit images and videos of any kind", which suggests image features exist, but no feature page describes them. For apps that explain their memory, see AI companions with memory.
Adult / NSFW Features
Chai's current official wording is restrictive. The Safety Center says: "Our models and real-time safety systems are designed to refuse the generation of restricted material, including sexually explicit content, self-harm content, and any content that sexualises minors." The EULA (updated July 2026) bans sexually explicit images and videos, and every user message is scanned in real time for self-harm, with crisis referrals.
The picture is not fully consistent. The EULA still acknowledges adult-oriented themes, users can turn on filters "to hide explicit messages", and the App Store lists "Infrequent Sexual Content or Nudity" and "Frequent/Intense Mature or Suggestive Themes". Chai's site does not document its older policy or when it changed, and we did not test enforcement. If adult roleplay is your goal, compare the policies in our NSFW AI girlfriend apps list.
Age Checks and the Regional Paywall
"CHAI is strictly for adults," says the Safety Center: you must be 18 or older, and the EULA restricts the app to users aged 18 and over. The App Store rates it 18+, while Google Play shows "Mature 17+", although Chai's site says the app is rated 18+ on both stores.
Regulators have looked at Chai's safety record. Chai AI was among 12 companies that 44 US attorneys general warned in August 2025 about sexualized chatbot interactions with children. In a March 2026 report based on answers to October 2025 legal notices, Australia's eSafety Commissioner found that Chai did not direct users to crisis support when self-harm was detected and lacked robust age checks; Chai's current Safety Center describes crisis referrals and Persona checks.
The Safety Center also says: "In some regions, use of the service requires a paid subscription." Chai does not list those regions. The same eSafety report says Chai had since restricted free access to chat and now requires a subscription, without saying whether that applies beyond Australia. PiunikaWeb, citing the founder's Reddit comments, reported in early 2026 that free access was blocked in 22 countries, including India, Pakistan, Egypt and Bangladesh, because of compute costs, while the US, Europe, Canada and Japan stay free and ad-supported. That country list comes from a secondary source, not from Chai. Our news page on Australia's age checks for AI companions explains the rules behind the eSafety review.
Mobile and Web Availability
- iPhone: version 2.198 (October 7, 2026), free with in-app purchases, rated 18+. See our AI companion apps for iPhone.
- Android: 10M+ downloads on Google Play, contains ads, updated October 13, 2026.
- Web and desktop: none. The home page says "CHAI WEB - Coming Soon...", and the EULA says the app is built for iOS and Android. For browser-based options, see browser-based AI companion apps.
Pricing
Chai publishes no pricing page, billing terms or plan descriptions. The only prices we could check are names and prices on the US App Store in-app purchase list (October 20, 2026). The in-app paywall needs a login and may differ.
| Plan | Price | Billing | Where | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Subscription (Monthly) | $13.99 | month | iOS (App Store US) | not described on the store listing |
| Premium Subscription (Annual) | $134.99 | year | iOS (App Store US) | not described on the store listing |
| Ultra Subscription (Weekly) | $19.99 | week | iOS (App Store US) | not described on the store listing |
| Ultra Subscription (Monthly) | $29.99 | month | iOS (App Store US) | not described on the store listing |
| Premium Membership | $9.99 | iOS (App Store US) | billing period not shown on the store listing | |
| Ruby Weekly | $9.99 | week | iOS (App Store US) | not described on the store listing |
Checked October 20, 2026. Source: apps.apple.com. Prices can differ by country, store and promotion.
The annual Premium plan works out to $11.25 a month, about 20% less than twelve months at $13.99. The weekly Ultra item is the expensive way in: $19.99 a week adds up to about $87 a month, almost three times Ultra's $29.99 monthly price. "Premium Membership" ($9.99) has no billing period on the list, and Chai does not explain "Ruby Weekly" ($9.99) either. We found no trial or lifetime plan.
Chai also sells Pieces, a coin used in the app:
| Pack (US App Store) | Price | Per Piece |
|---|---|---|
| 200 Pieces | $2.79 | about $0.014 |
| 500 Pieces | $6.99 | about $0.014 |
| 1,000 Pieces | $13.99 | about $0.014 |
Bigger packs are not cheaper per Piece. Chai does not explain what Pieces are spent on; only the Play reviews above describe them as a chat currency.
Cancel and refunds: Chai publishes no cancellation steps or refund policy. Subscriptions bought in the app run through Apple or Google, so manage them in your store account; the "Unsubscribe" link in Chai's site footer only stops marketing emails. Our cancellation guide has the store steps, and the AI companion pricing overview compares other apps.
Free Plan
Chai has a free tier: its privacy policy says ads are shown "if you have a free subscription". The free allowance and its limits are not published, and the Play reviews cited above suggest daily Pieces now gate chatting. In regions where Chai requires a paid subscription, there is no free tier at all. If a free tier matters to you, our free AI roleplay apps list compares the options.
Privacy and Data Handling
From the privacy policy (updated October 12, 2026), the EULA and the store labels:
- Collected: account data from your Google, Facebook or Apple login, your chats and created chatbots (which may include sensitive information you share), subscription data and usage data such as IP address and activity logs.
- Training: yes. Conversation data is used to "enhance and fine tune" Chai's models after personal identifiers are removed. No in-app opt-out is described; EU and UK users have a GDPR right to object.
- Human review: a Trust and Safety team reviews reports, and every message is scanned automatically for self-harm. Routine staff reading of chats is not described.
- Encryption: in transit per Google Play; at rest or end-to-end not stated.
- Sharing: data processors (including in the US), advertising partners for attribution and free-tier ads, and Persona for age checks. Google Play's label lists data shared with third parties, including approximate location, device IDs, photos and purchase history. The policy has no statement on selling data.
- Retention and deletion: delete in the app under Profile, Settings, Delete Account. Data may be kept for the life of the account and up to five years after deletion. No chat export is documented.

FAQ
Is Chai free?
In many regions, yes, with ads. Chai does not publish the free limits, and it says some regions require a paid subscription. The cheapest US App Store plan clearly labelled monthly is Premium at $13.99.
Does Chai allow NSFW?
Chai's Safety Center says its models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, and the EULA bans explicit images and videos. Mature themes and fictional violence can still appear.
Is there a Chai web version?
No. Chai runs only on iPhone and Android; its home page lists the web version as "coming soon".
Why does Chai ask for a selfie?
Chai is 18+ only and uses Persona for age assurance, through a selfie age estimate or a government ID check.
How do I cancel a Chai subscription?
Chai publishes no steps. Cancel through your Apple ID or Google Play subscriptions, where the purchase was made. Deleting the app does not stop billing.
Final verdict
Chai gives adults a simple way to chat with community characters on a phone, free with ads in many regions. Beyond that, it documents little: no memory or voice details, no price page and no billing, cancellation or refund terms.
The content policy is now restrictive, some regions must pay to use it at all, there is no web version, and chats feed model training with long retention. Try the free tier if it is available where you live, but check what the in-app paywall offers before you subscribe, and avoid the weekly plans.
