Every AI roleplay chatbot runs on the same loop, but a few features decide whether a story holds together after a hundred messages:

Scenario and example dialogue: the opening situation and a sample of how the character talks.
Lorebooks: world facts inserted only when a keyword comes up, so they do not fill the context all the time.

Creators fill in personality, scenario, several initial messages and example dialogue, plus advanced prompts and scripts (beta) for triggers, events and lorebooks. Public chats can be published, forked and continued by others.

The standout is model choice: connect your own model through an API proxy (the help center's quickstart uses OpenRouter with DeepSeek), or, on janitor+, use the web-only Router to pay per token for third-party models. Adult content between consenting adult characters is allowed under published rules; the mobile apps open in a Restricted Mode. The backstory takes up to 2,000 characters (2,500 for subscribers), alongside key memories, example messages, a response directive and keyphrase-triggered journal entries (up to 500 per set), which work much like a lorebook.

You can then talk to the character in voice or live video calls. Erotic roleplay is allowed in private chats, not in shared content. A Character Definition holds up to 32,000 characters with example dialogue, a character can have 5 extra greetings, Scenes and Stories (branching interactive fiction) add structure, and Lorebook is in beta. Memory combines Story Memory with pins (15 free, 30 paid) and, on c.ai+, auto-captured Facts. Messaging is unlimited on every plan, voice calls are free, and the free PipSqueak 3 style is what the company calls its "go-to for general roleplay".

Two things hold it back. Pornographic content is banned for everyone and the filters are permanent, though romance and mature drama are allowed. And Character Technologies filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026: the platform runs for now but will be wound down if no acceptable bid keeps it going. Content Rules and Age Checks

Romance and adult storylines are where roleplay apps differ most. Character.AI bans pornographic content for everyone, Talkie bans even suggestive content, and Chai says its models refuse sexually explicit material. The apps that allow adult content all ban sexual content involving minors. Janitor AI's ban also covers "minor-coded" characters, and Nastia AI's covers "aged-up" characters.

Age checks depend on where you live. Janitor AI requires a one-time k-ID check in the UK, Australia and Brazil; SpicyChat requires a video selfie or ID before NSFW content in France, the UK, Italy, Australia and 26 US states; Character.AI runs age assurance on every account and users verified as under 18 cannot chat; Kindroid checks flagged free accounts with Yoti. Store rules explain why adult roleplay lives on the web: Apple's guideline 1.2 says incidental NSFW content from a web service must be hidden by default, and Janitor AI says its apps start in Restricted Mode for store compliance.
