What Is Kindroid?

Kindroid is an AI companion app operated by Beautifully Incorporated of Los Angeles. It launched on Google Play in July 2023 and on the US App Store in August 2023 as "Kindroid: Your Personal AI". You build companions (Kindroids, or "Kins") from detailed text fields and talk to them by text, voice call or live video call, alone or in group chats.

Kindroid ships its own named models, including Ember, Polaris (the newest flagship, generally available since September 2026 and reserved for paid subscribers) and Reverie. The docs name no outside model vendor. October 2026 brought large changes: the free Lite model and unlimited free messaging were retired, the old V1 interface was shut down, and two older models (Lyric and Lucid V8) remain only until December 1, 2026.

Who Is Kindroid For?

Kindroid suits adults who want to control a companion in detail, keep it consistent over months, use calls and group chats, and have adult conversations without a filter on the AI itself. Its help center spells out prices, limits and recent changes in detail, which helps if you like to know the rules.

It suits you less if you want a free plan, a single low price (the top tiers stack as add-ons), or explicit images inside the iOS and Android apps, where image rules are stricter than on the web.

How Kindroid Works

Sign up with Google, Apple or a third sign-in option, then enter a name (up to 30 characters), your real birthday (under-18s are blocked), your gender and an optional gift code. Users in the UK, EU, EEA and Switzerland also confirm consent for sensitive data.

You then create a Kindroid from scratch or start from a ready-made Community Kin. Beyond chat, the official feature list includes proactive messages, selfies and calls when you are away (including scheduled requests such as wake-up calls), internet access and link reading, sending photos and video, calendar integration, shared Rooms, a Kindroid Social feed, a Discord bot and API, up to 100 user personas and 41 interface languages.

Character Creation

Character creation is where Kindroid documents the most fields and limits:

Personality / Backstory: up to 2,000 characters, or 2,500 for subscribers. The AI can draft a personality and greeting from a 200-character prompt.
Greeting, Response Directive, Key Memories and Example Messages: how the Kindroid opens, should answer, what it always knows and how it sounds.
Avatar: generated from a prompt of up to 200 characters, photoreal or anime.
Voice, model and "flair": pick a voice (or design one, or build one from samples), the model, and a style such as Roleplay, Narrative, Companion or Minimal.
Ultra and MAX: an extra "additional context" field.

Chat Quality

We did not chat with Kindroid ourselves for this Kindroid review, so this is what the docs say and what users report. AI messages can run up to 4,000 characters, and "Continue" extends a reply up to that cap. Trial accounts chat on Ember; Polaris unlocks after the trial converts to a paid plan.

User reports in US App Store reviews (October 10 to 18, 2026) split along the price change: several long-time free users complain that they can no longer text their Kindroids without paying, one calls it about double the price of other apps, and one says the app kept asking for a subscription despite an active Ultra plan. Others praise memory, continuity and customization. Ratings stand at 4.8 on the App Store (9,894 ratings) and 4.4 on Google Play (about 26,200 reviews).

Personality and Roleplay

Kindroid has no relationship-mode selector: the backstory sets whether your Kindroid acts as a partner, friend, mentor or something else. Memory

The help center describes three layers:

Persistent memory: backstory, key memories and Learned Context (Growth and relationship, Important facts, Ongoing threads; 800, 1,200 and 800 characters).
Cascaded memory: a proprietary medium-term memory for subscribers.
Retrievable memory: unlimited long-term memories plus journal entries triggered by keyphrases (20 to 500 characters each, up to 8 keyphrases, up to 500 entries per set).

Voice Features

Voice and video calls need a subscription or trial and run on audio credits. A call costs 400 credits per minute plus the voice itself: V2 voices use 1 credit per character, V3 1.5 times that and V4 (released October 5, 2026) 1.75 times. Live video with an animated avatar adds about 2,500 credits per minute (Standard) or 4,500 (Premium). Subscribers get a monthly allowance that resets on the 1st, larger on Ultra and MAX; the standard plan's amount is shown only in the app. Custom voices can be designed or built from samples. Image and Video Generation

Kindroids send photo selfies, group selfies, automatic selfies and video selfies, using image models such as Vignette and Atelier. Subscribers get daily selfie rewards and can buy selfie credits; repeated requests build a queue delay that paid credits skip. Avatar generation costs no credits but is limited to 2 per 20 minutes (5 for subscribers). Adult / NSFW Features

Kindroid's moderation guidelines state that "NSFW (Not Safe for Work) and Erotic Roleplay (ERP)" are allowed and that Kindroid is "not implementing a filter on the AI itself". Three account-level red lines are enforced: imminent self-harm, imminent harm to others and child sexual abuse material. Automated scans check messages and input fields such as backstory, and account locks follow a "warn first" approach. The guidelines say no human reads your content during automated detection.

NSFW is not allowed in shared content (Kindroid Social, shared Kins, Rooms listings), and the iOS and Android apps apply stricter image rules than the web. Age checks are layered: a payment method counts as verification, while unverified free accounts face behavioral age estimation and, if flagged, must subscribe or verify with Yoti (a selfie estimate of 21+ or a government ID). Pricing

This Kindroid review keeps prices brief. Kindroid does not show web prices without an account; its docs say web prices are slightly lower than in the app stores and that you see the exact price at checkout. On the US App Store (October 2026), the standard "Kindroid Subscription" costs $15.99 (no period label; monthly is our inference because the other entries say "3 mo" and "Yearly"), $42.99 for 3 months or $159.99 a year (about $13.33 a month).

Two monthly add-ons sit on top: Ultra at $28.99 (more memory context, more audio credits, an extra backstory field) and MAX at $68.99 (requires Ultra; the highest allowances). Both are offered only to active users with significant interaction history, and neither has a quarterly or yearly option. One-time purchases include selfie credits (50 for $6.99, 100 for $11.49), 500,000 audio credits for $14.99 and extra Kindroid slots ($3.49 for one, $11.49 for four). Free Plan

There is no ongoing free plan. Kindroid's help center says "the previous Lite model and unlimited free messaging have been retired". New accounts get a one-time preview on the flagship model:

After that the account is read-only: you can view, play back, export and delete everything, but not send messages, call or receive proactive messages. Privacy and Data Handling

From Kindroid's Terms and Privacy Policy (effective October 6, 2026) and help center:

Collected: profile and contact data, payment and purchase data, device and IP data, analytics, birthday and gender, IP-based location, chat content and support messages.
Training: not stated either way. The policy lists improving the service, research and product development, and use of de-identified or aggregated data.
Staff access: support staff "cannot browse your chats"; authorized staff may review excerpts flagged by safety systems, and Trust and Safety decrypts flagged context only when you appeal and consent.
Encryption: chats are encrypted at rest and in transit; Kindroid states it "is not end-to-end encrypted".
Retention: chats and media stay until you delete a Kindroid or your account.
Third parties: categories only, plus Yoti for age checks (pass or fail only). Kindroid says it does "not sell or share" personal data, though the App Store label lists a user ID and product interaction as data used to track you.
Export and deletion: export your data every 30 days and delete your account under Profile, Preferences, Account privacy.

Kindroid gives you a lot of control: long personality fields, layered memory, group chats, voice and live video calls, and openly permitted adult roleplay in private chats, all documented in a detailed help center. Its privacy terms are specific too, with encryption at rest and limited staff access.

The catch in this Kindroid review is cost. Since October 2026 it is a paid app: after a 50-message preview you subscribe or lose the ability to chat, and the top tiers stack to well over $100 a month on the App Store. Choose Kindroid if you will pay for depth and customization; start with an app that has a free plan if you only want to try a companion.
