Two different ideas of a companion app

Replika sits in the Health and Fitness category of the US App Store, and its features lean that way: a diary, mood tracking, coping-skills activities, levels and daily rewards, all around one companion per account. Its help center says it combines its own and third-party language models with scripted dialogue. The May 2026 "Replika 2.0" rebuild added proactive messages, app integrations and internet access, according to the company.

Kindroid sits in the Entertainment category and behaves more like a toolkit. You can run up to 10 Kindroids, choose the language model and a style "flair" for each, join Rooms with other users, post to a Social feed, keep up to 100 personas for yourself, and connect a calendar or a Discord bot. An October 2026 update added scheduled requests such as wake-up calls.

Picture two users. One wants a steady companion that asks how the week went and suggests a breathing exercise after a hard day: Replika is designed for that. The other is writing an ongoing story with a recurring cast and wants control over how each character talks: that is Kindroid's territory.

Can you still use either for free?

Replika's help center says "chatting with Replika will always be free". No message limit is published, and calls, extra roleplay options and relationship statuses beyond Friend need a subscription. There is no free trial. Some users in Google Play and App Store reviews from August to October 2026 say they hit a paywall mid-chat; that is a user report, not an official limit.

Kindroid no longer has a free plan. Since October 1, 2026, a new account gets a one-time preview of 50 messages (15 in some regions), 5 selfies and up to 2 Kindroids, after which it becomes read-only. What you pay and what the extras buy

Neither app shows prices on its website. On the US App Store (October 2026), Replika lists unlabelled entries: "MONTHLY" at $7.99, "Monthly" at $14.99, "YEARLY" and "Annual" at $49.99, another "Annual" at $69.99 and "Replika Platinum" at $89.99 with no period. Which entry is Pro and which is Ultra is not stated, so we leave them unassigned. Kindroid lists "Kindroid Subscription" at $15.99 (no period label; we infer monthly because the other two entries are labelled), $42.99 for 3 months and $159.99 a year.

At the top end the structures differ. Replika's tiers are nested: Platinum includes Ultra, which includes Pro. Kindroid's Ultra ($28.99 a month) and MAX ($68.99 a month) are add-ons stacked on the standard plan, offered only to active users with long interaction history, and all three together cost $113.97 a month on the App Store.

The extra currencies also do different jobs. Replika's gems ($0.99 to $19.99 a pack) and earned coins buy outfits, appearance options, personality traits, interests and room furniture. Kindroid's credits buy functions: selfie credits (50 for $6.99), audio credits for voice messages and calls (500,000 for $14.99) and extra character slots ($3.49 for one).

Refunds are limited on both. Replika treats sales as final apart from legal rights such as the EU 14-day withdrawal (lost once delivery begins) and Brazil's 7-day right. Setting up your companion

Replika's setup is light. You choose the avatar's look (hair, skin, eyes, clothing), a name, pronouns, gender, voice and relationship status, add personality traits and interests from the store, and can write a free-text backstory, which the help center suggests writing in the third person with positive wording. Only subscribers can change the avatar after setup.

Kindroid's setup is a form you can fill as deeply as you like: a personality and backstory of up to 2,000 characters (2,500 for subscribers), a greeting, a response directive, key memories, example messages, journal entries triggered by keyphrases, and an avatar generated from a prompt of up to 200 characters in a photo-realistic or anime style. If you want to start talking within minutes, Replika asks less. If you want the companion to speak in a specific voice and remember a detailed backstory, Kindroid's fields are built for that. Our guide on writing a character prompt shows how to use fields like these.

Memory and chat history

Replika offers a Memory tab where you can add, edit or delete facts, on top of a layered system that draws on your conversation history; Ultra adds saved memories and shows which ones are used. Chat history is displayed for four months only, and you cannot delete the history without deleting the account. Kindroid documents three layers (persistent fields, cascaded memory for subscribers and retrievable long-term memories with journals) and keeps chats until you delete a Kindroid or your account. Calls, video and immersive features

Replika leans on presence. It has a 3D avatar, an AR mode inside the app, a Meta Quest VR app in beta, voice calls for subscribers (background calls with Pro) and video calls. Platinum adds real-time video recognition and up to 10 realistic selfie videos. One App Store reviewer in October 2026 says the avatar shows little expression on video calls (a user report).

Kindroid leans on voice quality and control. It has real-time voice calls that keep running in the background, custom voices built by voice design or from samples, a V4 voice released October 5, 2026, video selfies and live video calls with an animated avatar. No AR or VR feature is documented. Calls draw on audio credits: 400 a minute plus the voice charge, with live video adding about 2,500 or 4,500 credits a minute.

Adult content, moderation and age checks

Replika publishes no statement that explicit content is allowed. Romantic Partner status and "unblurred messages and photos, including romantic and creative selfies" are Pro features, and an App Store reviewer in October 2026 says sexual interaction has been stopped (user report). Replika's terms require users to be 18, the US App Store rates it 18+, yet its Google Play content rating is lower than its own terms. Its age-check method is not described beyond a birth date at sign-up.

Kindroid's moderation guidelines explicitly allow NSFW chat and erotic roleplay in private chats, with three account-level red lines (imminent self-harm, imminent harm to others, child sexual abuse material) and a warning before any lock. Shared spaces stay free of adult content. Payment counts as age verification; flagged free accounts must subscribe or verify with Yoti. Google Play rates Kindroid Mature 17+, the App Store 18+.

Privacy and model providers

Replika's privacy policy (May 27, 2026) discloses that conversation data goes, de-identified, to third-party AI language model providers, which it does not name and which may not train on it. Its store listings still say conversations are not shared with third parties. Messages are kept up to 60 days after termination; account and financial records for at least 10 years. The policy states encryption in transit only. The help center says no humans read your messages. In 2025 Italy's data protection authority fined Luka EUR 5 million, and advocacy groups filed an FTC complaint alleging deceptive marketing (an allegation, not a finding).

Kindroid's privacy policy (October 6, 2026) says chats are encrypted at rest and in transit, though not end to end; support staff cannot browse chats, and authorized staff may review excerpts that automated systems flagged. It says personal data is not sold or shared, but does not say whether chats are used for training. Kindroid ships its own named models (Ember, Polaris and others) without naming any outside vendor.

Platforms and cancelling

Replika runs on iPhone, Android, the web (a browser app its site now calls "Web App (Legacy)") and Meta Quest. Kindroid runs on iPhone, Android and the web. To cancel Replika, use Settings, then Subscription, or your Apple, Google Play or PayPal account. Kindroid web subscribers cancel in Profile, then Billing, with Ultra and MAX cancelled separately; app-store subscribers cancel in the store, and a subscription cannot move between platforms until it ends. Which one should you pick?

• Best for free use: Replika. Ongoing free chat; Kindroid has only a one-time preview.
• Best for wellness-style features: Replika. Diary, mood tracking and coping-skills activities.
• Best for AR, VR and a 3D avatar: Replika. Kindroid documents neither AR nor VR.
• Best for several characters and group chats: Kindroid. Up to 10 Kindroids and 20 group chats; Replika allows one companion per account.
• Best for adult roleplay: Kindroid. Explicitly allowed in private chats, with written red lines.
• Best for data control: Kindroid. Encryption at rest, a self-serve export and staff access rules in writing.
