Voice Calls vs Voice Messages: What Is the Difference?

Apps use the word "voice" for three different features, and the difference matters when you compare prices.

Two details are worth checking before you pay. First, whether you can talk back: SpicyChat documents read-aloud only, while Nomi, CrushOn.AI and Muah AI let you send voice messages too. Second, what happens to the call afterwards: Character.AI saves each call's transcript as a text chat, and Nomi's calls share the history of your text conversation.

Kindroid documents more voice features than any other app here: real-time calls that keep running in the background, live video calls with an animated avatar, voice replies on messages, and custom voices you design or build from samples. A new V4 voice arrived on October 5, 2026, and an October update added scheduled requests such as wake-up calls.

Everything runs on audio credits. A call costs 400 credits a minute plus the voice itself (V2 voices 1 credit per character, V3 1.5 times, V4 1.75 times), and live video adds about 2,500 or 4,500 credits a minute. Subscribers get a monthly allowance shown only in the app; 500,000 extra credits cost $14.99 on the US App Store. Calls need a subscription ($15.99 a month there) or the 3-day trial. On a paid plan, Nomi lets you send voice messages, hear every reply aloud with "Always Reply With Voice", and make hands-free calls that share your text chat's history. Its wiki says Nomi's in-house voices and Custom Voices have "unlimited usage", so there is no minute meter; ElevenLabs voices, if you connect them, draw on your own ElevenLabs allowance.

Two limits: replies on calls are not instantaneous, per the wiki, and voice is paid-only (the free plan's 50 daily messages are text). The US App Store lists the Standard Plan at $15.99 a month. Replika's home page says your companion will "pick up every time" you call. Voice calls are a subscriber feature, background calls and voice messages come with Pro, and premium voices are part of the paid tiers. Video calls with camera sharing appear on both store listings, and Pro adds roleplay in voice and AR calls.

Character.AI is the only app here with free voice calls: "Character Voice is available to all users, free of charge", and Character Calls, two-way voice conversations, are free on mobile and web in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin "and more". Each call's transcript is saved as a text chat, and creators can give a character a voice from a 3 to 15 second clip.

Two caveats: it bans adult content for everyone, and Character Technologies filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026, saying the service will be wound down if no buyer keeps it running. See our Character.AI review.

DreamGF publishes what voice costs, which few adult platforms do: a voice message is 3 tokens and a browser voice call 7 tokens a minute, with no included minutes. Calls arrived on August 2, 2024 and are a Premium benefit; the builder lets you pick a voice and keeps a "My Voices" history.

Premium includes 150 tokens a month on the plans page (100 in its policies), so a 10-minute call uses 70. The plan costs $12.99 for the first month, then $25.98. One Trustpilot reviewer wrote in June 2026 that calls work "20% of the time" (a single user report). Web only; see the DreamGF review.

Voice calls are labelled beta and also paid with tokens; Candy publishes no per-minute price and says voice may be unavailable for some characters or accounts. Premium Plus adds "live audio", and Candy Roulette, a video chat with characters, costs 5 tokens a minute.

Kupid AI states its voice allowance in minutes: Pro includes 12 minutes of voice messages a week, Ultra 35 minutes a week and the lifetime plan 35 minutes a month. Each companion speaks in a voice picked at creation, and paid tiers list "Talk to Her", which the lifetime plan describes as talking "with your voice".

ULTRA VIP is the tier described as "Real-time phone call access", and long replies can be trimmed by voice access limits.

Other apps and voice

• EVA AI: its Terms describe chat "via text, voice, and (where available) video call interface", but no plan, minutes or countries are published, and a July 2026 Google Play reviewer said video chat was not available. See the EVA AI review.
• Nastia AI: voice messages and cloned custom voices are on the paid plan; official pages disagree on whether voice calls exist.
• GirlfriendGPT: the FAQ says companions send voice messages; no calls or limits are documented.
• Chai, Talkie and Paradot: voice is mentioned in store text or policies, with no feature details or limits.
• Janitor AI: no voice yet; a June 2026 post lists voice among planned features.
• Romantic AI and Anima: not confirmed. Romantic AI's Terms mention "audio generations" paid with Hearts, and Anima's home page says "Chat, call, and connect anywhere", but neither describes a voice feature.

What Voice Costs: Credits, Tokens and Tier Gating

Voice is rarely priced the same way twice. These are the published numbers; anything not listed is not public.

To compare a metered app with a flat one, convert to minutes. Kindroid's figures put a 500,000-credit pack at about 500 minutes with a V2 voice, 333 with V3 and 286 with V4. On DreamGF, Premium's 150 monthly tokens would cover about 21 minutes of calls if spent on nothing else. Nomi's in-house voices, by contrast, have no meter at all on a paid plan. Free vs Paid Voice

Free voice is rare. Character.AI is the clear exception: calls and Character Voice cost nothing, though free accounts see ads and the company is in a court-supervised sale. CrushOn.AI lists voice messages and one custom voice slot on its free plan. Kindroid's one-time preview for new accounts includes 5,000 audio credits, after which the account turns read-only unless you subscribe.

Everywhere else, voice is paid: Nomi (any paid plan), Replika (subscription), SpicyChat (top tier only), Kupid AI (Pro and up), Nastia AI (paid plan), and Candy AI and DreamGF (tokens on top of Premium). Our list of free AI girlfriend apps with voice tracks the free options in more depth.

Custom Voices and Voice Cloning

Several apps let you pick or build your companion's voice:

• Kindroid: custom voices by voice design or from samples, plus V2, V3 and V4 voice models.
• Character.AI: a character voice from a 3 to 15 second clip.
• CrushOn.AI: cloning from about 30 seconds of audio, for private use, with a consent checkbox.
• SpicyChat and Nastia AI: custom voices from uploaded samples on paid tiers.
• Nomi: Custom Voices, or your own ElevenLabs voices through its integration.

Cloning a real person's voice raises consent questions the apps handle differently. Providers such as Microsoft require a recorded consent statement for personal voices, and the EU AI Act requires providers of systems that generate synthetic audio to mark it as artificial. Limits to Expect

• Latency: Nomi's wiki says call replies are not instantaneous.
• Beta features: Candy AI's calls are beta and may be unavailable for some characters or accounts.
• Availability: EVA AI's calls are "where available", and Muah AI's calls depend on "if your account has access".
• Trimmed replies: Muah AI may shorten long replies to fit voice access limits.
• Reliability: store and Trustpilot reviewers report voice freezing after an update (Nomi), calls that rarely connect (DreamGF) and unanswered voice clips (Paradot). These are user reports, not tests.

Voice Data and Privacy

A voice is personal data, and the apps say different things about it. Character.AI's privacy policy lists voice recordings among the data it collects when you use voice features. CrushOn.AI's wiki says recordings you send are deleted after 24 hours. EVA AI's policy covers voice recordings shared "in chat or calls", and Nastia AI's covers custom voice samples. Replika says the face and head movement data used in some features is processed on your device and not stored. Kindroid names no voice provider, and Nomi's ElevenLabs option runs through your own ElevenLabs account.
