Do AI Girlfriend Apps Store Your Chats?

This guide covers how long AI girlfriend and companion apps keep your conversations and what each kind of deletion actually removes. It sits in our AI companion privacy section, which also covers training use and who can read your messages. All facts come from the apps' privacy policies, terms and help centers as of October 20, 2026; we did not create accounts.

Why AI Girlfriend Apps Store Your Chats

A companion's memory is your stored chat history plus notes the system extracts from it. Each reply is generated from a slice of that history that fits the model's context window, and long-term memory features (Nomi's Mind Map, Kindroid's cascaded memory, Replika's Memory tab) pull older facts back in. None of that works without keeping your messages on the company's servers. Our guide to how AI companion memory works explains the mechanics.

So the useful questions are how long chats stay, what happens when you delete them, and which copies survive. Policies answer those very differently.

How Long Each App Keeps Your Chats

The table below quotes or closely paraphrases each app's own documents. "No period" means the policy says data is kept as long as necessary without a number.

Only a handful of policies commit to a number for chats or account data. If yours does not, assume conversations stay until you delete them, and possibly longer.

What "Delete" Actually Removes

Deleting a message or a chat

Deleting a single message rarely erases what the companion learned from it. Muah AI's guide says it plainly: deleting a message does not guarantee that a fact already saved in a memory summary disappears. CrushOn.AI's FAQ says chat history older than 24 hours cannot be deleted message by message. Replika lets you delete individual memories in its Memory tab, but there is no way to delete your whole message history without deleting the account. Kupid AI's FAQ notes that deleting a chat removes that companion's memory.

Deleting a character

Several apps let you delete one companion and its conversations while keeping your account: Nomi (single Nomis), Kindroid (single Kindroids, whose chats and media are kept until you do) and Muah AI (a per-slot "Fresh Restart"). On Character.AI, a public Character you created may stay online even after you delete your data and account.

Deleting your account

Account deletion is the only step that reaches most of your data, and timing varies. Nastia AI deletes immediately and permanently, including companions, chats, images, videos and remaining tokens. Nomi completes deletion within about 28 days, Janitor AI first deactivates the account for a grace period, and CrushOn.AI allows recovery for 3 days. CrushOn.AI and Nastia AI require you to end an active subscription first. Deleting the app from your phone does none of this.

What stays behind

Read the exceptions, because every policy has some:

• Payment and accounting records: kept for tax law, for example 10 years at Replika, Candy AI and Romantic AI.
• Rule-violation records: Nastia AI keeps records of reports and violations, including related prompts and chats, for up to 7 years or longer during an investigation.
• Training data: Nomi keeps "training archives" that are no longer attributable to you; Romantic AI and Kindroid may keep anonymised or aggregated data.
• Support messages: Nomi archives support communications as company records.
• Account metadata: Janitor AI may keep your email and sign-in details in deleted-account records.
• Copies at third parties: EVA AI says deletion does not recall data already sent to third parties, and some content may persist in cached pages. Replika is the exception that says an erasure request also reaches its AI model providers.

Do AI Companion Apps Keep Backups?

Most policies do not mention backups at all, which means you cannot tell how long a deleted chat survives in them. Nastia AI is the clearest: backups run on a regular overwrite cycle, so deleted data drops out as old backups are replaced. Treat any app that is silent as likely to keep backup copies for an unknown period.

Your own backups are a different matter. Kindroid offers a self-serve data export every 30 days, Character.AI exports your data from its settings, and Muah AI's "Download Data" creates a backup file that can only be restored to the same account. Inactive Accounts

Walking away does not delete your data, with a few exceptions. CrushOn.AI's pricing page says free-plan chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity, and Candy AI may remove account content after defined periods of inactivity, keeping account data up to 3 years after last activity. Replika shows only the past 4 months of chat history in the app, but its 60-day retention clock starts when your contract ends, not when you stop chatting. Kindroid accounts that lose their plan become read-only but keep all data. DreamGF may even charge former paying users $1.99 a month to keep their data stored, so close accounts you no longer use.

Some Chai users say on Google Play that chats are now deleted after 30 days (user reports); Chai's own policy does not say so.

How to Make Sure Your Chats Are Gone

1. Export anything you want to keep (Kindroid, Character.AI and Muah AI have built-in exports).
2. Cancel your subscription where you bought it; some apps block deletion while a plan is active.
3. Delete the account in the app or website settings, not just the app. Our account deletion guide lists the menu path for each app.
4. Use the legal route where there is no button: email an erasure request (GDPR or state privacy law) and keep the reply.
5. Note the timeline: deletion may take up to about 28 days at Nomi or follow a grace period at Janitor AI.
