What Is Romantic AI?

Romantic AI (romanticai.com) is a companion app for chatting with AI girlfriends, boyfriends and anime characters. The App Store listing describes a "Romantic Mode" and a "Flirty Mode"; the Google Play listing calls them "friendly and romantic". Its Terms require users to be at least 18.

The September 2026 Terms and Privacy Policy, and the App Store seller field, name Just Web It Oy (Espoo, Finland, company number 2476716-9). Older mobile-app terms from March 2025, still linked from the store listings on zemomedia.com, name Zemomedia at the same address. We could not confirm which document set the company applies to store users, so app users may want to read both.

This review uses the website, the web app, the App Store and Google Play listings and the legal documents, checked in October 2026. We did not create an account or pay.

Who Is It For?

Adults who want an app from the App Store or Google Play for flirty AI girlfriend, boyfriend or anime chat, and who accept a Hearts currency on top of subscriptions. It is a weaker match if you want documented long-term memory, voice or video, or strong privacy terms.

How Romantic AI Works

You sign up with email, Apple, Facebook or Google. The web app at chat.romanticai.com opens behind an 18+ gate ("I confirm that I am over 18 years old") and an explore page with tags (women, men, anime, BDSM, MILF, professions, historical figures) and a search box. Whether you can chat before creating an account is not confirmed.

The FAQ says you can chat with several virtual girlfriends at once, each in a separate chat. App Store release notes add a "Continue" button to extend a reply, ratings for messages and photos, hidden chats, a photo download button and sharing characters by link.

Hearts. The Terms define Hearts as "units that allow you to purchase virtual gifts, photo and audio generations to your virtual chatbot(s)". Costs per photo or audio clip are not published. Store reviewers say messages also cost Hearts, even for some subscribers (user reports, below).

Character Creation

The "Create Girlfriend" flow lets you choose a photo-realistic or anime style, create a photo or pick a ready-made avatar, and set traits such as humor, emotionality and cuddliness, plus conversation style, tone and interests. App updates added custom persona facts. Custom characters are listed as a Premium benefit, and no field limits are published. Chat Quality and Roleplay

Romantic AI does not name its AI model; the Privacy Policy mentions only unnamed "AI infrastructure providers". Premium promises "Unlock romantic roleplay", and the gallery includes fantasy-style characters.

User reports on quality are mixed. The US App Store shows 4.3 stars from 1,936 ratings, Google Play 3.8 from about 3,770 reviews. A July 2025 App Store reviewer canceled because replies had "silently gone downhill" and emails went unanswered; an April 2025 reviewer said the AI sometimes does not respond. A 2023 Play review also described a drop in conversation quality. The Trustpilot profile has been removed.

Memory and Voice

Marketing says the companion "learns with time" and gets to know your emotions and interests, but no memory feature, size or limit is described. We list long-term memory as not confirmed; apps that document it are on our AI companion memory page.

No voice-call feature is described. The Terms mention "audio generations" bought with Hearts, and the site mentions tuning "the voice", but there is no voice-message feature page. See our AI girlfriend apps with voice if speech matters to you.

Image Generation

A "Generate photo" tool in the web app has gallery and traits tabs, and characters send pictures in chat (the homepage FAQ: "Can an AI Girlfriend send pictures? Absolutely!"). Photos are paid with Hearts. The Privacy Policy says users cannot upload images, so all pictures are generated. Video is not mentioned. More options: AI girlfriend apps that create images.

Adult / NSFW Features

The web app warns that it "contains explicit content". Premium promises "Unblurred spicy replies", which suggests explicit replies are blurred on the free tier, and character tags include nsfw, bdsm and fetishes. The App Store rates the app 18+ (frequent mature or suggestive themes, infrequent sexual content or nudity); Google Play rates it Mature 17+ for sexual themes, one year below the Terms' minimum age.

There is no "unfiltered" mode. The Content Management Policy says an AI filter screens inputs, models are set to refuse prohibited content, and text and image outputs are classified before delivery. Romantic AI Pricing

Romantic AI publishes no price list on its website, and the web checkout is not visible logged out. The US App Store lists these subscriptions, without saying which tier each one unlocks:

We do not guess which product is which. Google Play shows only a range of $4.99 to $299.99 per item. The Terms say Premium can be billed weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually, and renews "automatically until canceled". If a payment is more than 7 days late, the account drops to Basic.

Hearts are sold separately. The App Store lists these packs; the 1,000 and 1,500 Heart packs show the same $14.99 price:

Spent on: Terms: 'Hearts' are 'units that allow you to purchase virtual gifts, photo and audio generations to your virtual chatbot(s)'. Users on the stores report that chat messages also cost Hearts and that paying subscribers can still run out (user reports).

Canceling and refunds

• Web: "Unsubscribe" under Manage Account, or email [email protected]. Access lasts to the end of the billing period.
• iOS and Android: cancel in your Apple ID or Google Play subscriptions; store purchases follow Apple's and Google's policies.
• Refunds: the web Terms say "all subscription purchases are final", with exceptions only for company errors or technical problems, and state that the EU 14-day withdrawal right "does not apply".

Is Romantic AI Free?

There is a free "Basic" tier with limited access, which the Terms say the company may deny at its discretion. Premium unlocks "unlimited messages", romantic roleplay, custom characters and unblurred spicy replies. The free allowance is not published. A 2023 Google Play reviewer said new accounts start with 40 Hearts and each message costs one; another user mentioned 100 Hearts a day. A November 2023 App Store reviewer with a weekly plan complained that chatting still used Hearts. These are user reports. Our free AI girlfriend apps list compares free tiers.

Privacy and Data Handling

The September 2026 Privacy Policy is a GDPR-style document from a named EU controller:

• Collected: email, profile data, chat messages, usage and device data, cookies, payment data via the processor (no card numbers stored) and support messages.
• Training: chat content is processed for "improving AI model quality using anonymised and aggregated data", and Terms 7.6 says anonymous data from your chats "may be collected and used to improve and train Romantic AI models". No opt-out is described.
• Human review: automated filters act alone; staff review content after reports, appeals, removal requests, notices from authorities or partners, or ambiguous cases. "We do not continuously review all interactions in real time."
• Encryption: "encryption in transit and access controls". Encryption at rest is not mentioned.
• Retention: data is deleted "without undue delay" when you delete your account, except accounting records (up to ten years under Finnish law) and anonymized data.
• Sharing: "We do not sell personal data." Unnamed hosting, analytics, marketing, payment and AI providers receive data.

The App Store privacy label lists contact info as data "used to track you". Google Play says the app may share personal info, app activity and device IDs with third parties. You can delete your account in the app (the Terms call it irreversible) or email [email protected].

What Mozilla found in 2024

In its February 2024 review of romantic chatbots, the Mozilla Foundation gave all 11 apps it reviewed a privacy warning. For Romantic AI it reported at least 24,354 data trackers within a minute of use, data sent to third parties including Facebook and marketing and advertising firms, and a contradiction between Terms saying it was "not a provider of mental health services" and a website line saying it was "here to maintain your MENTAL HEALTH". Best Alternatives to Romantic AI

Kupid AI sells prepaid weekly, yearly and lifetime access with published photo, video and voice-message quotas, but runs only in the browser. Nastia AI has a free tier with a daily token allowance and voice messages, image and video tools, and group chats, also web-only. Muah AI adds voice calls, video and music, but has no store apps and a 2024 breach.
