What Is Janitor AI?

Janitor AI (janitorai.com, run by JanitorAI Inc.) is a community platform for interactive AI character stories. The home page says "Be anyone. Build anything." and claims "15M+ users"; in the app stores it is called "Janitor: Interactive Stories". Users create characters, publish them and chat with characters made by others.

What sets it apart is the model choice. By default chats run on JLLM, which the help center calls "the default model used in Janitor unless you've hooked up an external one via API. It's free, built-in." You can also plug in an outside model or, on janitor+, pick third-party models through the Router. Our list of AI character chat apps covers similar platforms.

Who Is Janitor AI For?

Based on its documentation, Janitor AI suits adults who want free, user-made roleplay characters, including adult themes, and who accept some setup for a stronger model.

It is a weaker fit if you want voice calls or AI images (neither exists yet), automatic long-term memory, or a polished mobile app: the apps are in beta and restricted by default. For a companion app rather than a roleplay platform, see our AI girlfriend app rankings.

How Janitor AI Works

You register on janitorai.com with email or Google sign-in. Logged-out visitors can browse character cards; we could not confirm whether a chat can start without an account. Characters carry a content tag: "Limitless" for anything with sexual or romantic themes, "Limited" for characters without them. You can set up personas, publish a chat for others to read, fork and continue (March 2026), and find similar characters.

Bring Your Own Model: API Settings and the Router

Janitor documents two ways to use a model other than JLLM:

• Your own API (any plan): in API settings you add a configuration with a model name, a proxy URL, an API key and a custom prompt. The help center's quickstart uses an OpenRouter chat-completions endpoint with a DeepSeek model as its example. The Terms of Service (October 8, 2026) list "configuring an API proxy in your settings on janitorai.com" as permitted use. You pay the outside provider directly.
• janitor+ Router (subscribers, web only): launched July 30, 2026, it offers third-party models inside Janitor without your own keys, billed per token from a dollar wallet. Subscribers got $5 in launch credits (expiring a year after claiming) and 10% off some popular models. The model list and per-model prices show only after login.

Character Creation

The creation page asks for a bot image (required, no nude or pornographic images), a name, an optional chat name, a bio (HTML allowed), up to 10 tags with a Limited or Limitless tag, a personality (required, ideally with example dialogue), a scenario, one or more initial messages and example dialogue. Advanced options include custom prompts, scripts (beta) for triggers, events and lorebooks, custom CSS, scheduled releases and creator analytics.

The help center suggests keeping a character's permanent tokens under about 2,500, ideally under 1,500, because they take up room in the context window. Our list of the best platforms for character creators compares these tools with other sites.

Chat Quality

We did not test Janitor AI ourselves, so this section relies on official notes and labelled user reports. JLLM is under active development: a v2 preview arrived in October 2025 and a short-response model in July 2026. The help center also calls "JLLM+" the recommended chat model for general roleplay without explaining how it relates to janitor+.

User reports on Google Play (4.3 out of 5 from about 20,700 reviews) praise that it is "totally free" and that response length can be adjusted, while asking for a less manual memory system and reporting mobile interface bugs. The US App Store average is 4.52 from 4,976 ratings (October 20, 2026). Reddit was not readable for our research.

Personality and Roleplay

Roleplay and interactive fiction are the whole point; the App Store listing mentions "romantasy, fanfiction, and interactive stories". Personality and scenario fields set the character, personas define you, and scripts add events. Memory

Janitor's memory is the model's context window plus a Chat Memory field you write yourself. On JLLM the window is about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, and the help center says the model forgets the oldest text when it fills up. janitor+ gives 5x more context. No automatic long-term memory is documented, which matches the user requests for a better memory system. Voice and Image Features

None yet. Janitor documents no voice messages, voice calls or image generation; the only images are the avatars and gallery pictures creators upload. The June 24, 2026 janitor+ announcement says "other modalities (think voice and image)" are planned, without a date. If voice matters, see our list of AI companions with voice.

Adult / NSFW Features

The Community Guidelines (February 4, 2026) say "JanitorAI permits adult content between consenting adult characters". There is zero tolerance, whatever the tag, for sexual content involving minors or characters coded as minors, incest between blood relatives, age regression, necrophilia, bestiality and pornographic or nude images. Automated tools screen all published content, and human moderators review reports.

The mobile apps are stricter. They start in Restricted Mode, which blocks characters with higher content scores, hides definitions and checks chats for keywords; you can switch to unrestricted mode only through profile settings on the website. That mirrors Apple's App Review rule that apps showing incidental NSFW content from a web service must hide it by default and let users turn it on via the website. In July 2025 a test system prompt meant to block banned topics also blocked ordinary adult chats and was rolled back. Age Rules and Regional Access (UK, Australia, Brazil)

The Terms say the platform is "intended solely for users who are at least 18 years of age", and suspected minors are permanently banned. In most countries age is self-declared. Users connecting from Australia, Brazil or the UK must pass a one-time check through k-ID (on-device facial age estimation, a government ID scan or AgeKey), and Janitor receives only a pass or fail result. Janitor names Australia's Online Safety Act codes, Brazil's Digital ECA and the UK Online Safety Act as the reasons, and says it has no plans to extend the check elsewhere. Mobile and Web Availability

• Web: janitorai.com is the main product and the only place to use the Router or turn off Restricted Mode. See browser-based AI companion apps for others.
• iPhone: "Janitor: Interactive Stories", version 2.7.0 (October 14, 2026), rated 18+ with Age Assurance.
• Android: same name on Google Play, 1M+ downloads, rated Mature 17+, described as a beta release.

The official apps entered public beta on February 7, 2026; Janitor had warned about fake apps before then, so check that the developer is JanitorAI. There is no desktop app.

Pricing

janitor+ is the only subscription (see our janitor+ launch news). The /plus page and the US App Store list show the same US dollar prices; Android prices were not visible on the public page.

The annual plan works out to $8.25 a month, which the page calls a 36% saving. janitor+ includes 5x more context, priority replies (up to 3x faster when busy), monthly "swipes" with the best models, more models, a golden username and checkmark, and Router access on the web. The page adds "Usage limits apply. Tax not included" without numbers. The page mentions no free trial, and we found no lifetime plan. Router credits need an active subscription, are final sale and are spent per token; if the balance runs out mid-chat, the current message may finish but further requests need funds.

Cancel and refunds: on the web, Settings, Billing, Manage Subscription (or email [email protected]); in the apps, through your App Store or Google Play subscriptions, which cannot be cancelled from the website. The plan runs to the end of the period, then reverts to free. Subscriptions are "generally non-refundable" except where the Terms or the law require it. Free Plan

The help center lists the free tier as "Unlimited chats with millions of bots", the standard chat models and a context of around 9,000 tokens, and promises: "We will always keep a free option available for everyone." No daily message cap is published. In September 2025 Janitor tested ads on character pages for logged-out visitors. Our free AI roleplay apps list compares other free tiers.

Privacy and Data Handling

From the privacy policy (September 17, 2026), the Safety page and the store labels:

• Collected: profile data, characters and chat conversations, payment information (handled by processors), log data, cookies and device information.
• Training: not stated clearly. The policy mentions "research and development to improve our AI systems", but does not say whether chats train JLLM, and no opt-out is described.
• Human review: automated screening of published content and human review of reports. The Safety page says "The conversations you have on Janitor are yours"; whether staff can read private chats is not stated.
• Encryption: HTTPS in transit; at-rest and end-to-end encryption are not specified.
• Sharing and sale: processors include Stripe, Supabase, Google, Resend and k-ID. Janitor says it does not sell personal data and never shares private conversations for advertising.
• Deletion: Settings, Security, Delete account with a 6-digit email code; support cannot do it for you. After a grace period, posts, characters, personas and profile data are removed. No chat export is documented.
