Quick answer
- Best documented memory: Nomi (Mind Map 2.0 you can view and edit, 10,000 characters per entry) and Kindroid (backstory, Learned Context, journals and unlimited retrievable memories).
- Simplest: Replika's Memory tab lets you add, edit and delete what your one companion remembers.
- Context sold by tier: SpicyChat 4K, 8K or up to 32K tokens; CrushOn.AI 8K, 16K or 24K; Janitor AI about 9K free and 5x on janitor+.
- Free memory: Nomi's free plan (50 messages a day), Character.AI's 15 free pins and Janitor AI's free model. Kindroid's memory needs a subscription since October 1, 2026.
- No app remembers everything: Nomi says recall is "not perfect", and Character.AI admits characters "appear to forget things".
Memory is the feature people mention most when they compare AI companions, and the one marketing describes most loosely. "She remembers everything" can mean an editable memory bank, an automatic summary, or simply a bigger context window. We did not create accounts or chat: this page compares what each app documents in its help center, wiki or plan page, checked on October 20, 2026.
How We Picked the Best AI Companion With Memory
We publish no scores. Apps rank higher when they document more of these:
- A described memory system, not just a marketing line.
- Control: can you view, edit, pin or delete what is remembered?
- Published capacity: context size, number of entries or characters.
- Free access to the memory features.
- Privacy of stored memories: deletion, export and training use.
- Stability: open caveats such as a pending company sale or a breach on record.
What Memory Means in an AI Companion
Companion apps combine up to four layers, and knowing which ones an app has tells you more than any "remembers you" claim:
- Context window: the recent conversation the model reads with each reply, measured in tokens. When it fills, the oldest text drops out. See our glossary entry on the context window.
- Manual memory: notes, pins or backstory fields you write yourself, sent with every reply.
- Automatic summaries: the app compresses older chat into short memories.
- Retrievable memory: a store of facts the app searches and brings back when they become relevant.
Our explainer on how AI companion memory works covers the mechanics in depth; if you build characters, memory setup for AI characters shows how to fill these fields.
The Best AI Companions With Memory, Ranked

Nomi documents its memory in more detail than any other app: short-, medium- and long-term memory, an Identity Core, and Mind Map 2.0 (October 2025), which shows memories as an interactive graph and a searchable table you can edit. Up to 50 entries per category are eligible for recall, up to 10 can be marked "high" priority, and each entry holds up to 10,000 characters. Backstory+ adds fields such as Preferences, Desires and Boundaries, and every group chat keeps its own backstory and Mind Map.
Its wiki is candid that recall "is not perfect". The free plan (50 messages a day) has no end date; paid plans start at $15.99 a month on the US App Store. Our Nomi review covers the rest.

2. Kindroid

Kindroid describes three layers. Persistent memory is your backstory (up to 2,000 characters, 2,500 for subscribers), key memories and Learned Context (Growth and relationship, Important facts, Ongoing threads). Cascaded memory is a proprietary medium-term layer for subscribers. Retrievable memory holds unlimited long-term memories plus journal entries triggered by keyphrases, up to 500 entries per set. An October 12, 2026 update upgraded the models behind long-term retrieval "so the memories most relevant to the current conversation come up more often".
The Ultra ($28.99) and MAX ($68.99) monthly add-ons raise context further. There is no free plan since October 1, 2026, but you can export your data every 30 days. See our Kindroid review or Nomi vs Kindroid.

3. Replika

Replika's Memory tab shows what your companion remembers, and you can add, edit and delete entries; the help center describes a deeper layer that draws on your overall conversation history. Replika Ultra adds saved memories and shows which ones are being used. The home page promises it "always remembers what matters".
Two limits: the app displays only the past four months of chat history (memories and diary entries remain), and you cannot delete the whole message history without deleting the account. It is one companion per account. More in our Replika review and Replika vs Nomi.

4. SpicyChat

SpicyChat sells memory by tier. The context window is 4,096 tokens on free and Get A Taste ($5.95 a month), 8,192 on True Supporter ($19.95) and up to 32,768 on I'm All In ($29.95), depending on the model. From Get A Taste, the Memory Manager lets you add, edit, delete and pin memories of up to 250 characters; from True Supporter, Semantic Memory 2.0 summarizes chats into memories automatically. Lorebooks add world facts.
The free tier relies on the shortest context and no Memory Manager. See the SpicyChat review and our SpicyChat plan guide.

CrushOn.AI publishes memory per plan: 8K tokens on Free, 16K on Standard ($5.99), Premium and Luxe, and 24K on Elite and Imperial. You can pin 4,000 to 8,000 characters per chat (about 800 recommended per pin), Auto-Summarization turns older chat into long-term memory, Luxe and above can re-summarize several times a day, and Save Memories keeps up to 100 selected messages.
Watch the free plan: it keeps 200 historical messages per character, and chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity. Group chats run on a model with 8K memory. Our CrushOn.AI review lists every tier.

6. Character.AI

Character.AI's Memory screen (May 2026) combines Story Memory with pinned messages: 15 pins free, 30 on (c.ai) lite ($4.99) and c.ai+ ($9.99). Older context is compressed in the background, and a Memory Usage bar shows how full it is. Facts, details captured automatically about your persona and the characters and reusable in new chats, are a c.ai+ feature, as is the first access to Lorebook. Creators get a 32,000-character Character Definition.
An older help article admits characters can "appear to forget things". Character Technologies filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026, so plan for a possible shutdown. See the Character.AI review.

7. Janitor AI
Roleplay platform by JanitorAI Inc

Janitor AI is honest about its limits: memory is the context window (about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens on the free JLLM model) plus a Chat Memory field you write yourself, and the model forgets the oldest text when the window is full. janitor+ ($12.99 a month) gives 5x more context. No automatic long-term memory is documented; scripts and lorebooks add triggered facts.
Google Play reviewers ask for a less manual memory system (user reports). Chats are unlimited on the free tier. More in the Janitor AI review.

Kupid AI states memory as a plain message count: the last 30 messages on Free, the last 100 on Pro ($12.99 a week) and unlimited on Ultra ($24.99 a week); the lifetime plan says "she remembers everything". Each companion has its own memory, companions do not share it, and deleting a chat removes that memory.
A paying Trustpilot reviewer wrote in January 2026 that an update cut memory to about 10 messages (one user report). See our Kupid AI review.

9. Muah AI

Muah AI replies from recent chat within a "membership-based token budget", so higher tiers see more. An optional Automatic AI Memory Compaction (beta) writes older facts into a System Summary you can edit. The guide warns that "a compact summary is not an archival backup" and that deleting a message does not guarantee a summarized fact disappears. Chat export and .muah backups exist.
Prices are visible only after login, and a 2024 breach exposed about 1.9 million email addresses with prompts. Read the Muah AI review first.
Other apps: memory claims without details
- Candy AI: claims "memory retention"; memory is tied to the active chat, Reset Chat or Delete Chat clears it, and Premium Plus lists "20 memory slots". No context size is published.
- Nastia AI: says companions "remember you"; one official comparison page says "up to 2 weeks", and a June 2026 Trustpilot reviewer said memory resets every 24 hours (user report).
- Talkie: advertises "extended memory", while its FAQ says "AI memory capacity is technically limited, causing older conversations to be forgotten".
- EVA AI, Paradot and Anima: all market memory ("remembering the little things", "New Memory", "emotional memory") without sizes or editing tools.
- DreamGF, GirlfriendGPT, Romantic AI and Chai: no memory system is documented.

How Memory Differs Between Apps
Memory you can read and fix
Being able to inspect memory is the practical difference between apps. Nomi's Mind Map, Replika's Memory tab, Kindroid's journals and Learned Context, SpicyChat's Memory Manager, CrushOn.AI's pins and Character.AI's pins all let you correct a wrong fact. On Kupid AI, Candy AI and most adult platforms, memory is a black box: you can only reset the chat.
Context windows sold by tier
Character platforms tend to sell context. SpicyChat's top tier sees up to eight times the free context, CrushOn.AI's Elite tier three times its free tier, and janitor+ five times Janitor AI's free model. A bigger window helps long roleplay but costs more, and Anthropic's model documentation notes that recall can degrade as context grows.
Per character or per account
Memory usually lives with one character. Kupid AI says companions do not share memory, Nomi gives each group chat its own Mind Map, and Character.AI's Facts can be copied into new chats on c.ai+. Replika is the exception by design: one companion per account, one memory.
Free vs Paid Memory
- Usable for free: Nomi's free plan (50 messages a day), Character.AI's 15 pins and basic Memory Usage bar, Janitor AI's free model with about 9K tokens, CrushOn.AI's 8K plan, SpicyChat's 4K context, and Kupid AI's last 30 messages.
- Paid upgrades: SpicyChat's Memory Manager ($5.95 a month) and Semantic Memory ($19.95); CrushOn.AI's 16K memory from $5.99; Character.AI's Facts on c.ai+ ($9.99); janitor+ ($12.99); Replika Ultra's saved memories; Kindroid's cascaded memory and its Ultra and MAX add-ons.
- Paid only: Kindroid as a whole, since its free plan ended on October 1, 2026.
For the free options in depth, see free AI companions with memory; for full plan costs, our pricing overview.
Limits: What Memory Will Not Do
- Perfect recall: Nomi says recall is "not perfect", Character.AI says characters can "appear to forget things", and Talkie says older conversations get forgotten.
- Backups: Muah AI warns a memory summary "is not an archival backup".
- Inactive accounts: CrushOn.AI deletes free chat history after 7 days of inactivity.
- Resets: resetting or deleting a chat clears its memory on Candy AI and Kupid AI.
- Updates: user reports describe memory shrinking after updates on Kupid AI and resetting daily on Nastia AI. These are single reports, not tests.
Privacy of Stored Memories
A memory bank is a profile of you: names, habits, relationships, sometimes health or sexual preferences. Before you fill it, check what happens to it:
- Deletion: Nomi says account deletion removes your data within about 28 days. Kindroid keeps chats until you delete the AI or the account. Replika keeps messages up to 60 days after you leave and cannot delete chat history without deleting the account. Muah AI offers "Wipe Cloud Data", though a summarized fact may persist.
- Export: Kindroid, Character.AI and Muah AI offer data or chat export; see our guide to exporting AI chat history.
- Training use: Character.AI retains some data to train its models, with a documented opt-out for EEA and UK users. Nomi uses aggregated, anonymized chat information with no opt-out; CrushOn.AI and Chai also use chats for training.
- Moderation scans: Kindroid's automated safety checks read input fields such as backstory and key memories, though no human reads them during detection.
- Company changes: in October 2026, 40 attorneys general asked the court handling Character.AI's sale to let users access and delete their data before any sale.
None of these apps offers end-to-end encryption. Our guides on whether AI girlfriend apps store your chats and deleting an AI companion account go further. For other features, browse the features section or the complete app ranking.
FAQ
Which AI companion has the best memory?
By documentation, Nomi and Kindroid. Nomi lets you view and edit memories in Mind Map 2.0; Kindroid layers backstory, Learned Context, journals and unlimited retrievable memories, but has no free plan.
Is there an AI girlfriend that remembers everything?
No app promises perfect recall in its documentation. Kupid AI's lifetime plan says "she remembers everything", but Nomi and Character.AI both say their companions can forget.
Can I edit what my AI companion remembers?
On Nomi (Mind Map), Replika (Memory tab), Kindroid (backstory, journals, Learned Context), SpicyChat (Memory Manager, paid), CrushOn.AI (pins) and Character.AI (pins). Muah AI lets you edit its summary.
Is long-term memory free?
Partly. Nomi, Character.AI, Janitor AI and CrushOn.AI include memory on free plans, but bigger context, automatic summaries and Facts usually cost extra. Kindroid has no free plan.
What is a context window?
The amount of recent conversation the model reads with each reply, measured in tokens. SpicyChat offers 4K to 32K, CrushOn.AI 8K to 24K, and Janitor AI about 9K on its free model.
Does deleting a chat delete its memory?
On Candy AI and Kupid AI, yes: resetting or deleting a chat clears that companion's memory. On Muah AI, a fact already in the summary may remain. Full deletion usually means deleting the account.
