What Is Character.AI?

Character.AI (also written Character AI or c.ai) is run by Character Technologies, Inc., based in Menlo Park, California. It calls itself an interactive entertainment platform for roleplaying and chatting with user-made AI Characters, and the home page promises access to "10M+ Characters".

It is a character platform, not a single-companion app. Replies come from its own proprietary models, offered as "chat styles": PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak for everyone, DeepSqueak and LongSqueak as premium styles. Around chat sit Scenes, branching Stories, a community Feed, (c.ai) Series microdramas and the Imagine image tools. Our page on AI character chat apps covers similar platforms.

Character.AI's Chapter 11 Sale: What It Means for Users

On October 12, 2026, Character Technologies filed a voluntary Chapter 11 case "to facilitate a court-supervised sale of the company". The official post says the platform "remains up and running", subscriptions "remain active, and billing is unchanged for now", and if paid features change, "we intend to notify subscribers in advance". The sale should finish by the end of November or early December 2026. If no acceptable bid allows the platform to continue, "the platform will be wound down".

TechCrunch reported on October 13 that Disney agreed to buy some assets for $20 million plus a non-exclusive technology license as the opening bid, with no buyer yet for the consumer platform. On October 14, New York's attorney general and 39 others asked the court to attach conditions to any sale, including age verification beyond self-declaration, limits on training AI with private chats without valid consent, and a chance for users to access and delete their data first. Who Is Character.AI For?

Going by its documentation, Character.AI suits adults who want safe-for-work roleplay, fan fiction and creative storytelling with a huge free library, and who accept ads. It also suits creators, who get a 32,000-character Definition field and a large audience for public Characters.

It does not suit people who want adult content, users under 18 (they can read but not chat), or anyone who needs certainty that the service will exist next year. If you want a romantic companion rather than a character platform, start with our ranking of AI girlfriend and companion apps.

How Character.AI Works

You need an account to chat: Google, Apple or email plus your birthday. Every account then goes through age assurance (below). You search the library, open a Character and chat, or create your own Character, persona or scene. New chats start on PipSqueak 3, which the September 28, 2026 blog post calls the "new go-to for general roleplay"; ShortSqueak favors short, casual replies. Charms, an in-app currency earned through quests or bought, pay for extra images, skipping slow mode or an ad-free pass.

Character Creation

The Help Center documents these creation fields:

• Name, tagline, description, tags and visibility (public, unlisted or private).
• Avatar (uploaded or generated) and an optional intro video.
• Voice from the library or cloned from your own 3 to 15 second clip.
• A greeting plus up to 5 extra greetings.
• The Character Definition, up to 32,000 characters: personality, backstory, speech patterns, rules and example dialogue with {{char}} and {{user}} placeholders.
• Lorebook, in beta since July 2026 (c.ai+ first).

Chat Quality

We did not chat with Character.AI ourselves, so this section reports official statements and labelled user reports. Officially, chats run on "a proprietary model that we continuously update". Premium styles are unlimited on c.ai+ and a daily allowance on lite. At busy times free users may wait in a queue or get "slow mode".

User reports split by store. Google Play averages 2.2 out of 5 from about 2.45 million reviews, and reviews from early 2026 complain that ads make the app hard to use. The US App Store averages 4.27 from 559,951 ratings (October 20, 2026). Reddit was not readable for our research.

Personality and Roleplay

Roleplay is the core use. Beyond one-to-one chats there are Scenes and, since November 2025, Stories, a branching interactive-fiction format. Romance and mature drama are allowed within the rules; "passionate romance" is a named genre. Group chats with several Characters exist, but a September 2025 update said an improved version was still being tested, and we could not confirm it is open to everyone. Memory

An older Help Center article admits Characters can "appear to forget things". The Memory screen launched in May 2026 adds:

• Pins and Story Memory: 15 pinned messages on free, 30 on lite and c.ai+.
• Facts: details about your persona and the Characters, captured automatically and reusable in new chats (c.ai+ only).
• Memory Usage bar and compression: older context is compressed in the background.

Voice Features

Voice is free. "Character Voice is available to all users, free of charge," says the Help Center, so Characters can speak their replies. Character Calls are two-way voice conversations on mobile and web in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin "and more", and the transcript is saved as a text chat. Image and Video Generation

Imagine Chat and Imagine Message create images from a chat moment, collected in the Imagine Gallery. Image use is "Limited" on free and lite and "Unlimited" on c.ai+, with no daily number published; Charms buy extra generations. AvatarFX animates images and Characters can have video intros, with no published limits. Sexual or nude images are prohibited.

Adult / NSFW Features

Character.AI does not allow NSFW content for anyone, adults included. The Help Center says pornographic content "will not be supported at any point in the future", and calls the company's stance on filters "final": asking to remove them "will result in a ban". Under-18 Rules and Age Assurance

Open-ended chat for users under 18 was removed after an October 29, 2025 announcement, starting in the US on November 24, 2025. Users verified as under 18 now get reading mode: past chats stay viewable and they can still create Characters, scenes and videos, use Imagine Chat and AvatarFX and play Stories, but they cannot chat with Characters.

Age assurance runs on all accounts. An in-house model estimates age from signals such as login information and activity. If it flags you as under 18, you can verify through Persona in Settings, Advanced, Verify Age: a selfie first, a government ID only if the selfie is inconclusive. Persona deletes biometric data and IDs within 7 days, and a c.ai+ subscription does not bypass the check. Sign-up is allowed from 13 (16 in the EEA and UK), but chat requires 18.

Regulators and courts are involved too. The FTC ordered Character Technologies in September 2025 to report how it tests for harm to children, Kentucky sued in January 2026 alleging the ban is easy to bypass with a fake birthday, and CNN reported the same month that Character.AI, its founders and Google agreed to settle five lawsuits over harms to young users. The US App Store now rates the app 18+.

Mobile and Web Availability

• Web: the full platform at character.ai, including calls. No native desktop app.
• iPhone: "Character AI: Chat, Talk, Text", version 1.17.4 (October 2, 2026), rated 18+.

Pricing

There are three tiers: free, (c.ai) lite (launched September 28, 2026) and c.ai+. US prices come from the Help Center and the US App Store list; they vary by country, and web checkout prices show only after login. The two Summer Flash Sale offers may no longer be available.

Free Plan

"We are proud to continue offering free and unlimited messaging for ALL users," says the c.ai+ FAQ. Free accounts also get PipSqueak 3, ShortSqueak, free voice and calls, 15 memory pins and a basic Lorebook. Privacy and Data Handling

From the privacy policy (effective July 1, 2026), the Help Center and the store labels:

• Collected: contact details, date of birth, general location, payment data, chats and other content, voice recordings if you use voice, device, usage and advertising data.
• Training: yes. An opt-out ("Improve the Model for Everyone" in Data & Privacy settings) is documented for EEA and UK users; the July 2026 update summary says users can opt out at any time.
• Human review: staff and contracted moderators act on flagged or reported content. Creators cannot see your chats with their Characters.
• Encryption: in transit per Google Play; at rest or end-to-end not stated.
• Sharing: advertising and analytics providers for tailored ads (the App Store label lists "Data Used to Track You"), Persona, Stripe and k-ID.
• Deletion and export: no fixed retention period. Delete the account from your profile (public Characters may stay active). Export via Manage Account & Data on the web or Export my data in the app.
