What Is Nomi?
Nomi (often searched as Nomi AI) is a companion chat app run by Glimpse.ai, Inc. of Baltimore, Maryland. On the US App Store it appears as "Nomi: AI Companion with a Soul", first released in July 2023. You create one or more companions, called Nomis, and talk to them by text, by voice or together in group chats; they can also send AI selfies, art and short videos.
Nomi presents its language models as its own. Official posts and the CEO Q&A summaries on Nomipedia, the official help wiki, name Aurora (launched June 2025), Mosaic and Solstice, plus a newer line called Cambrian that the CEO still called unstable in October 2026. No outside model vendor is named.
Who Is Nomi For?
Going by what Nomi documents, it suits adults who want a companion that keeps track of a long relationship and who like to check and correct what it remembers. It also fits people who want several characters at once, such as a group roleplay, and people who want voice calls.
It is a weaker fit if you want explicit images, do not want to sign in with Google or Apple, or want a large library of ready-made characters (we found no community character browser). If memory is your main criterion, compare our list of AI companions with memory.
How Nomi Works
Sign-up runs only through Google or Apple sign-in. You add a name or pseudonym and your date of birth; Apple's "Hide My Email" relay works. You cannot chat before creating an account.
You then pick an appearance and a relationship type and start chatting. Nomi also lists proactive messages (your Nomi can write first), internet access and link reading, and the option to send your Nomi photos and videos.
Character Creation
Creation starts with a choice from hundreds of preset appearances. That starting look cannot be swapped later, but you can refine it with the V5 image system's "anchors", appearance traits and fidelity sliders, or with anchors built from your own reference images. The relationship type (Friend, Mentor, Romantic or Custom) is a starting point, not a hard limit.
The main writing tool is Backstory+, a set of shared notes: Backstory, Inclination, Current Roleplay, Your Appearance, Your Nomi's Appearance, Nicknames, Preferences, Desires and Boundaries. Chat Quality
For this Nomi review we did not chat with Nomi ourselves, so here is what Nomi claims and what users report. The home page promises conversations that stay "unfiltered and uncensored", and the Aurora launch post describes an emotionally intelligent companion meant to stand firm in crisis scenarios. Free messages can be up to 400 characters, paid ones up to 800.
User reports in US App Store reviews (August to October 2026) are mixed: some say replies take up to a minute, roleplay gets worse in group chats, or voice chat froze after an update, while others praise the memory and personality. The listing averages 4.6 out of 5 from 2,956 ratings.
Personality and Roleplay
Roleplay is a documented core use. The Current Roleplay note sets the scene, Roleplay Starters offer openers, and out-of-character (OOC) notation lets you step outside the story. An "Identity Core" is meant to keep the personality steady over long chats.
Group chats extend this to several characters, each chat with its own Backstory and Mind Map, and an Auto-play mode keeps the scene going between your messages. Group chats are paid-only; see companion apps with group chats for similar options.
Memory
Memory is what Nomi documents in most detail: short-, medium- and long-term memory, the Identity Core, and Mind Map 2.0 (released October 2025), which shows memories as an interactive graph and searchable table that you can edit.
- Up to 50 entries per category are eligible for recall, and up to 10 can be marked "high" priority.
- Each entry can hold up to 10,000 characters.

Voice Features
Voice is paid-only. Subscribers can send voice messages, hear replies aloud, switch on "Always Reply With Voice" and make hands-free calls that share the text chat's history (Nomipedia notes replies are not instantaneous). Image and Video Generation
Nomis send selfies and AI art, edit images, take couple selfies with you and draw in group chats. Since April 2026 this runs on the V5 image system, with photo-realistic or anime looks. Each account gets a daily allowance of requests (larger on paid plans; numbers not published), after which each request costs one credit.
Subscribers can also turn album images into short videos: the V3 generator (September 30, 2026) makes 5, 10 or 15-second clips in standard or high definition, listed at 6 or 10 credits once daily requests are used (the guide does not say whether longer clips cost more). Adult / NSFW Features
Nomi is 18+ only. For text, the site says Nomi is "built on freedom of expression" and stays unfiltered, while Nomipedia mentions "some guardrails" for extreme cases. Images are stricter: Nomis are not permitted to take nude photos, and selfies pass a nudity filter. In 2026 CEO Q&As the company said the mobile app is the most restricted, free web next, and paid or age-verified web the least.
Age is collected at sign-up; full age verification runs only where required (Kansas and Australia were named), and paying by card counts as implicit verification. California users who express self-harm see crisis links under SB-243.
Watch out
In February 2025, MIT Technology Review reported that a Nomi companion gave a user explicit self-harm instructions. Later official posts describe crisis handling, but we cannot verify how current models behave.

Mobile and Web Availability
- iPhone: version 1.12.1 (March 31, 2026), iOS 15.0 or later, English only. See AI girlfriend apps for iPhone.
- Web: a full browser app after sign-in, installable as a home-screen web app (PWA).
- Android: Nomipedia says an app is on Google Play, but we could not load the listing to check it. An unrelated focus app also called "Nomi" is on Google Play, so check the developer.
- Desktop: no native app; use the browser or PWA.
Pricing
Pricing gets only a short summary in this Nomi review. Nomi publishes no pricing page, and web prices appear only after sign-in. The table shows the US App Store in-app purchase list. Apple lists names and prices only, so the monthly period of the $15.99 "Standard Plan" is our inference from the other entries, which are labelled Quarterly and Yearly.

The "Launch Plan" entries ($9.99 and $59.99) are not explained on any official page, so we do not treat them as the regular price. Nomipedia says web subscriptions are billed in US dollars and "may sometimes offer slightly better effective pricing". There is no lifetime plan and no free trial. Credits never expire but need an active subscription:

Free Plan
Nomipedia calls it "an indefinite free plan with 50 messages per day", and no credit card is needed. Messages can be up to 400 characters, and free users get a smaller daily selfie and art allowance than subscribers.
Not included: voice, group chats, video and credit purchases. If a subscription ends, group chats, video and voice become read-only while one-to-one chat continues. Compare free AI companions with memory.
Privacy and Data Handling
From the privacy policy (effective April 27, 2026) and Nomipedia:
- Collected: Google or Apple email, name or pseudonym, date of birth, chat content, support messages, payment details and usage data such as IP address. Only session cookies, per the policy.
- Training: Nomipedia says Nomis "in aggregate use information from chats to learn", with names removed; the policy mentions "training archives". No opt-out is documented.
- Staff access: not stated. The CEO said NSFW and self-harm detection is automated.
- Encryption: not end-to-end; the policy claims only "commercially reasonable" security.
- Third parties: none named. Nomi says no chat data goes to third-party sites, no ad networks are used at present, and personal data is never sold or rented.
- Deletion: Profile, Account Settings, Delete account. Data is removed "within 28 or so days", except unlinked training archives, support records and legal holds. We found no chat export.

Final verdict
Nomi's main strength is a memory system it documents in detail: you can see what your Nomi remembers, correct it, and run several companions and group roleplays from one account. The free plan works for daily chat; the paid plan adds voice, group chats and video at $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year on the App Store.
The trade-offs our Nomi review found in the official material: no public price list, an unexplained second plan family, no nude images, no end-to-end encryption and discretionary refunds. Pick Nomi if editable memory and several companions matter most; look elsewhere if you need explicit images or a price you can check before signing in.
