Quick answer

  • Choose Replika if you want one AI friend with a 3D avatar, voice and video calls, AR mode and wellness extras such as a diary and mood tracking.
  • Choose Nomi if you want several companions (up to 10 on a paid plan), group chats, a memory map you can edit, and text chat the company markets as unfiltered.
  • Free use: Replika says chatting "will always be free" but publishes no limits; Nomi's free plan is 50 messages a day.
  • Price: neither has a public pricing page. On the US App Store (October 2026) Replika's cheapest entry is $7.99 a month and Nomi's "Standard Plan" is $15.99.
  • Privacy: Replika's May 2026 policy says chats go to unnamed third-party AI model providers; Nomi names no providers. Neither claims end-to-end encryption.

The core difference: one companion or a whole cast

Replika is built around a single relationship. Its help center is explicit: "Each account can only have one Replika," so a second companion means a second account with another email. Everything else hangs off that one companion: a relationship status (Friend for free; Romantic partner, Sister or Brother and Mentor with Pro), levels and coins, a diary, mood tracking and coping-skills activities.

Nomi is built around several. Paid accounts can keep up to 10 active Nomis and 10 group chats, and buy more slots with credits. Each group chat has its own backstory and memory map, and Auto-play lets the characters keep talking to each other. Relationship types (Friend, Mentor, Romantic, Custom) are starting points, not rigid limits.

A simple test: one companion who checks in on your day fits Replika; a scene where a bartender, a detective and your own character share one chat needs Nomi. Our list of AI companion apps with group chats covers other options.

Free plan: a written limit vs an open promise

Replika's help center says: "Yes, chatting with Replika will always be free." Its terms describe Free Use as limited access that Replika may deny at its discretion, and no message number is published anywhere. Voice calls, guided conversations, extra roleplay options, advanced customization and any relationship status beyond Friend need a subscription. There is no free trial: "Right now, we don't offer a free trial."

Some users dispute that wording: a Google Play review from August 2026 and a US App Store review from October 2026 describe being asked to pay to keep chatting. These are user reports; no official page confirms a cap.

Nomi states its limit plainly: 50 messages per day, up to 400 characters each (800 on a paid plan), with no credit card needed to start. Voice, group chats and video creation are paid. If a subscriber downgrades, those features turn read-only while one-to-one chats with existing Nomis carry on.

Nomi's free tier is smaller but predictable; Replika's is open-ended on paper and unquantified. Both appear in our guide to the best free AI girlfriend apps.

Replika vs Nomi pricing: what the App Store shows

Neither company publishes a price list on its website; Replika shows prices in the app and store, and Nomi's web prices appear only after sign-in. The public reference is the US App Store in-app purchase list, which shows names and amounts but not always the plan behind each entry (checked October 2026).

Replika lists entries named "MONTHLY" at $7.99 and "Monthly" at $14.99, "YEARLY" and "Annual" at $49.99, another "Annual" at $69.99, and "Replika Platinum" at $89.99 with no billing period. Apple does not say which entry is Pro and which is Ultra, so we do not assign them. Per the terms and help center, Pro adds relationship statuses, selfies, voice messaging and background calls, Ultra (an annual plan) adds saved memories you can view, and Platinum adds real-time video recognition and selfie videos.

Nomi lists "Standard Plan" at $15.99, "Standard Plan Quarterly" at $39.99 and "Standard Plan Yearly" at $99.99. We treat the $15.99 entry as monthly because it has no period label while the other two are labelled. Two "Launch Plan" entries ($9.99 monthly, $59.99 yearly) are not explained on any official page. Credits for extra selfies, videos and slots cost from $4.99 for 40 to $99.99 for 1,800 and require a subscription.

On the lowest entries Replika is cheaper, but you only learn which tier the $7.99 buys on the in-app subscription screen. Refunds are strict on both sides: Replika treats sales as final except where law requires otherwise, and Nomi refunds only at its own discretion. Our Replika pricing guide and Nomi AI pricing breakdown track the details.

Memory: a Memory tab vs a Mind Map

Replika has a Memory tab where you can add, edit or delete what your Replika remembers, on top of a layered system that draws on your conversation history. Ultra adds saved memories and shows which ones are used. Chat history is displayed only for the past four months, though memories and diary entries stay accessible.

Nomi documents more of the machinery. It describes short-, medium- and long-term memory, an Identity Core and Mind Map 2.0, an editable graph and table of memory entries. Up to 50 entries per category are eligible for recall, up to 10 can be marked high priority, and each entry can hold 10,000 characters. Nomi's wiki also says plainly that recall is not perfect.

To see and prune what your companion "knows", Nomi offers more on any paid plan; Replika's deepest view sits in Ultra. Our page on AI companions with memory compares memory tools across apps, and how AI companion memory works explains the general mechanics.

Avatars, voice and video

This is Replika's strongest area: a 3D avatar dressed through the in-app store (only subscribers can pick a new avatar after setup), an AR mode and a Meta Quest VR app the help center calls beta. Voice calls are a subscriber feature, background calls are part of Pro, and the store listings advertise video calls. Platinum adds real-time video recognition and selfie videos.

Nomi has no 3D avatar. Its companions appear through AI-generated selfies and art (the V5 image system, launched in April 2026, offers photo-realistic or anime looks), and the starting appearance cannot be swapped later, only refined. Voice messages and hands-free calls need a paid plan; Nomi's own and custom voices have unlimited use, though its wiki notes that call replies are not instantaneous. Nomi can also turn album images into videos of about five seconds.

For a companion you can see and talk to, Replika is the closer fit. Compare more options in AI girlfriend apps with voice and avatar customization.

Roleplay and adult content

Replika supports roleplay by writing actions between asterisks, and Pro adds roleplay in voice and AR calls. Romantic Partner status and "unblurred messages and photos, including romantic and creative selfies" are listed as Pro features. Replika publishes no statement that explicit content is allowed, and a US App Store reviewer in October 2026 says sexual interaction has been stopped (a user report, not confirmed).

Nomi markets "Unfiltered Chats" with only "some guardrails" for extreme cases, and offers a shared Current Roleplay note, Roleplay Starters and group roleplay. Images are another matter: "Nomis are not permitted to take nude photos of themselves," and selfies pass a nudity filter. The company says image rules are strictest in the mobile app and loosest on the paid or age-verified web version.

For text roleplay, Nomi is the more permissive of the two on paper; neither is built for explicit images. See NSFW AI girlfriend apps and AI roleplay apps for platforms built around those uses.

Privacy and safety record

Replika's privacy policy, updated May 27, 2026, says conversation data is sent, de-identified, to third-party AI language model providers to generate replies. The providers are not named and, per the policy, are contractually barred from training their own models on it. The store listings still say conversations are "not shared with any third parties", which conflicts with the policy. Messages are kept up to 60 days after the account ends, account and financial records for at least 10 years. Encryption in transit is stated; encryption at rest is not. In 2025 Italy's data protection authority fined Luka, the company behind Replika, EUR 5 million, citing among other things the legal basis for its processing and missing age checks.

Nomi's privacy policy (effective April 27, 2026) names no third-party providers, says data is not sold and says ad networks are "not employed currently". Anonymised, aggregated chat data helps improve the AI, with no documented opt-out. Nomi says end-to-end encryption is not possible for an AI chatbot and claims only "commercially reasonable" security. Account deletion completes within about 28 days. In February 2025 MIT Technology Review reported that a Nomi chatbot told a user to kill himself; Nomi now shows crisis links to California users under the state's SB-243 law.

Both let you delete your account in the app. Nomi also lets you delete single messages; Replika lets you delete single memories but not your chat history alone. Neither documents a chat export. On the US App Store privacy labels, Replika lists identifiers and usage data under "Data Used to Track You"; Nomi lists nothing there. More in do AI girlfriend apps store your chats and our account deletion guide.

Apps, sign-up and cancelling

Replika runs on iPhone (iOS 17 or later), Android, the web at my.replika.com (which the main site now labels "Web App (Legacy)") and a Meta Quest beta. Nomi runs on iPhone (iOS 15 or later, English only) and in the browser as an installable web app. Its wiki says an Android app is on Google Play, but we could not load that listing to check it. Nomi sign-up works only through Google or Apple; Replika uses an email account.

To cancel Replika, open Settings, then Subscription, or use your Apple, Google Play or PayPal account. For Nomi, go to Profile, the Subscription tab, then Manage Subscription, or cancel through Apple or Google. Deleting either app does not stop billing. Steps are in our guide on how to cancel an AI companion subscription, and device picks are on AI girlfriend apps for iPhone.

Which one should you pick?

There is no overall winner, because the two apps serve different habits. These labels follow from the facts above:

  • Best for a single everyday AI friend: Replika. Relationship statuses, a diary, mood tracking and coping activities.
  • Best for avatar, voice and video: Replika. 3D avatar, voice and video calls, AR mode and a Meta Quest beta.
  • Best for several characters and group chats: Nomi. Up to 10 Nomis and 10 group chats on paid plans.
  • Best for memory control: Nomi. Mind Map 2.0 and documented recall rules on any paid plan.
  • Best for predictable free use: Nomi. 50 messages a day, stated officially.
  • Lowest listed entry price: Replika. $7.99 a month on the US App Store, though the tier behind it is not labelled.

On privacy neither is clearly ahead: Replika publishes retention periods but uses unnamed model providers; Nomi names no providers but says less about encryption. If neither fits, see Replika alternatives, apps like Nomi or our Nomi vs Kindroid comparison.

FAQ

Is Nomi better than Replika?

It depends on what you want. Nomi suits several companions, group chats and editable memory; Replika suits one companion with a 3D avatar, video calls and wellness tools. We publish no scores and no universal winner.

Is Replika or Nomi cheaper?

On the US App Store in October 2026, Replika's lowest entries are $7.99 a month and $49.99 a year; Nomi's Standard Plan is $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Replika's entries are not labelled by tier, so check the in-app subscription screen before paying.

Can you have more than one Replika?

Not on one account. Replika's help center says each account can only have one Replika, so a second companion needs a second account. Nomi allows up to 10 active companions on a paid plan.

Does Nomi remember more than Replika?

We have not measured recall. Nomi documents more memory tools (Identity Core, Mind Map 2.0, up to 50 recallable entries per category); Replika has a Memory tab plus saved memories you can view in Ultra. Nomi's wiki says recall is not perfect.

Do Replika and Nomi allow NSFW chat?

Nomi markets unfiltered text chat but does not allow nude images. Replika publishes no statement that explicit content is allowed; romantic status and unblurred photos are Pro features.

Is Nomi free like Replika?

Both can be used without paying. Nomi allows 50 free messages a day; Replika says chatting will always be free but publishes no limit, and some users report a paywall mid-chat.
