Best Companions AI

Comparison

Nomi vs Kindroid

Nomi vs Kindroid is a close match: both offer up to 10 companions, group chats, voice calls, selfies and layered memory. Since October 1, 2026 the big split is access, because Kindroid no longer has a free plan while Nomi still allows 50 free messages a day. Kindroid answers with written adult-content rules, detailed character fields and a data export.

Quick answer

  • Choose Nomi if you want to keep chatting for free (50 messages a day), use voice a lot (its own voices are unmetered on paid plans) or want the cheaper yearly plan ($99.99 vs $159.99 on the US App Store).
  • Choose Kindroid if you want adult roleplay that the rules explicitly allow, detailed character fields with a community library, up to 20 group chats and a self-serve data export, and you are fine paying from the start.
  • The big change: on October 1, 2026 Kindroid retired its free plan. New accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages, then the account turns read-only.
  • Common ground: up to 10 companions on a paid plan, group chats, voice calls, selfies, video and layered memory, and the same $15.99 monthly entry on the US App Store.

Nomi vs Kindroid at a glance

Both apps are built for several custom companions with long memory, group chats and media; the differences sit in access, extras, content rules and data handling. Data from official pages and US store listings, October 2026.

What changed at Kindroid on October 1, 2026

Kindroid's subscriptions help page now says: "The previous Lite model and unlimited free messaging have been retired." The official update log dates the change to October 1, 2026, when the old V1 interface was also shut down.

A new account gets a one-time preview on the flagship model: 50 messages (15 in some regions), 5 selfies, 5,000 audio credits and up to 2 Kindroids. After that the account is read-only: you can view, play back, export and delete everything, but not send messages, call or receive proactive messages. Users of the old free Lite tier got a final 50 interactions.

Nomi made no comparable change: its free plan still allows 50 messages a day, 400 characters each, with no card and no end date. Voice, group chats and video stay paid. Mid-October 2026 App Store reviews of Kindroid include long-time free users who can no longer message their companions without paying (user reports). If free access is your main test, see free AI companions with memory.

Kindroid's 3-day trial needs a payment method

Kindroid offers new users a 3-day premium trial with most subscriber perks. It needs a payment method and converts to a paid plan unless you cancel; Kindroid says it emails a reminder a day before. Trial chats use the Ember model, while the newer Polaris unlocks only after conversion. On the web the trial needs a verified mobile number. Nomi has no trial; its free plan plays that role.

Watch out

If you start Kindroid's trial only to look around, set a reminder to cancel. Kindroid's help center says sales are generally final and refunds are considered case by case.

Subscription prices and Kindroid's add-ons

Neither app publishes prices on its website; web prices appear only at sign-in or checkout, and both say web billing can be slightly cheaper than the app stores. The US App Store lists are the public reference (checked October 2026):

US App Store entryNomiKindroid
Main plan, monthly (period inferred)$15.99 ("Standard Plan")$15.99 ("Kindroid Subscription")
Main plan, 3 months$39.99$42.99
Main plan, yearly$99.99 (about $8.33 a month)$159.99 (about $13.33 a month)
Other entries"Launch Plan" at $9.99 monthly and $59.99 yearly, not explained on any official pageUltra add-on $28.99 a month; MAX add-on $68.99 a month

Kindroid's Ultra and MAX are layers, not alternatives. Ultra requires the standard plan, MAX requires both, and both are offered only to active users with significant interaction history. They add memory context and audio credits; all three together cost $113.97 a month on the App Store. Nomi has no add-ons; its open question is what the "Launch Plan" entries are.

Kindroid renews at the then-current non-promotional rate, and lapsed early-adopter discounts cannot be bought again. Neither app sells a lifetime plan, and neither offers routine refunds. Our Nomi pricing page and Kindroid pricing guide go deeper.

Credits and the cost of voice

Both apps sell extras that require an active plan (or Kindroid's trial). Nomi uses one currency for everything:

PackPricePer unit
40 Nomi Credits$4.99$0.125
100 Nomi Credits$9.99$0.100
225 Nomi Credits$19.99$0.089
600 Nomi Credits$49.99$0.083
1,800 Nomi Credits$99.99$0.056

Spent on: 1 credit = 1 selfie, art or image edit request (used only after the daily allowance is spent); 6 credits = standard-definition video, 10 = high-definition video; 25 = extra group chat room; 50 = anchor generation; 100 = extra Nomi slot. Credits do not expire; an active subscription is required to buy them.

Checked October 20, 2026. Source: wiki.nomi.ai. Prices can differ by country, store and promotion.

Kindroid splits its extras: selfie credits (50 for $6.99, 100 for $11.49), audio credits (500,000 for $14.99) and slots ($3.49 for one more Kindroid, $11.49 for four), all US App Store prices.

Voice is where the two models part ways. On a paid Nomi plan, Nomi's own voices and custom voices have unlimited use; only ElevenLabs voices draw on your own ElevenLabs account. Kindroid meters voice: subscribers get a monthly allowance of audio credits, calls cost 400 credits a minute plus the voice charge (1 credit per character for V2 voices, 1.5 times that for V3, 1.75 times for V4), and live video adds about 2,500 or 4,500 credits a minute. The size of the monthly allowance is shown only in the app's Billing menu.

If you want a long call every evening, check Kindroid's allowance before subscribing, since extra audio is a separate purchase. See AI companions you can talk to for how other apps handle calls.

Nomi vs Kindroid memory: Mind Map or journals

Nomi's approach is a memory you can see and edit. Besides short-, medium- and long-term memory and an Identity Core, Mind Map 2.0 shows entries as a graph and a searchable table. Up to 50 entries per category can be recalled, up to 10 marked high priority, each up to 10,000 characters. Each group chat keeps its own Mind Map.

Kindroid's approach is layered and author-driven. Persistent memory comes from the backstory, key memories and Learned Context fields. Cascaded memory, a proprietary medium-term layer, is for subscribers. Retrievable memory covers unlimited long-term memories plus journal entries triggered by keyphrases (20 to 500 characters each, up to 8 keyphrases, 500 entries per set). Ultra and MAX raise the context.

Kindroid's journals work like a lorebook: write an entry about a fictional city once and it surfaces when the city comes up. Nomi suits people who would rather review and correct what the companion has learned. We have not measured recall in either. More on companion apps with long-term memory and setting up character memory.

Character creation and ready-made characters

Nomi starts from hundreds of appearances and a relationship type, then uses Backstory+ fields: Backstory, Inclination, Current Roleplay, Your Appearance, Your Nomi's Appearance, Nicknames, Preferences, Desires and Boundaries. You can upload reference images as custom image anchors. There is no community library of other people's characters.

Kindroid offers more explicit control: a personality and backstory of up to 2,000 characters (2,500 for subscribers), a greeting, a response directive, key memories, example messages, a choice of language model and a "flair" such as Roleplay, Narrative, Companion or Minimal. It can draft a personality from a 200-character prompt, and its Community tab lists ready-made Kins searchable by name, tag and creator.

If you like writing a character sheet with sample dialogue, Kindroid's fields map to it directly. If you prefer plain notes and letting a personality develop, Nomi's Backstory+ is simpler. Compare more apps with custom characters.

Group chats

Paid Nomi accounts get 10 group chats, each with its own backstory and Mind Map, plus an Auto-play mode. Kindroid subscribers get 20 group chats with up to 10 Kindroids each, plus Rooms shared with other users. Both sell extra slots. Some Nomi App Store reviewers say roleplay quality drops in groups (user reports). More options: companion apps with group chats.

Adult content and filters

Kindroid's moderation guidelines say "NSFW (Not Safe for Work) and Erotic Roleplay (ERP)" are allowed, and that Kindroid does not filter the AI itself. Three red lines (imminent self-harm, imminent harm to others, child sexual abuse material) are enforced at account level by automated scans, with a warning before any lock. Adult content is not allowed in shared spaces such as Kindroid Social, shared Kins or Rooms listings, and the iOS and Android apps apply stricter image rules than the web.

Nomi markets its text chat as "unfiltered and uncensored", with "some guardrails" for extreme cases. Its images are filtered: Nomis may not send nude photos, and the company says image rules are strictest in the mobile app, looser on the free web version and loosest for paid or age-verified web users.

For explicit text roleplay, Kindroid's written policy is the clearer of the two. See NSFW AI girlfriend apps and unfiltered AI chat for wider lists.

Age checks

Both apps are 18+, and both count a card payment as age verification. Nomi otherwise relies on the date of birth given at sign-up, with full checks only where local rules require them. Kindroid screens free accounts with behavioural age estimation; flagged users must subscribe or pass a Yoti check (a selfie estimate of 21 or older, otherwise ID).

Privacy, encryption and data export

Kindroid's policy (effective October 6, 2026) says chats are encrypted at rest and in transit, though not end to end. Support staff "cannot browse your chats"; authorized staff may review excerpts flagged by automated systems, and Trust and Safety reviews flagged context only if you appeal a lock and consent. Kindroid says it does not sell or share personal data, but does not say whether chats train its models. You can export your data every 30 days, even from a read-only account.

Nomi's policy (effective April 27, 2026) says data is not sold and names no third-party provider. Anonymised, aggregated chats help improve the AI, with no documented opt-out. Its policy claims "commercially reasonable" security and states no encryption at rest or in transit. There is no documented chat export, and account deletion completes within about 28 days.

On the US App Store privacy labels, Kindroid lists a user ID and product interaction under "Data Used to Track You"; Nomi lists nothing there. On documented protections (encryption, staff access, export), Kindroid publishes more. Read can AI companion apps read your messages and how to export AI chat history.

Apps and cancelling

Kindroid has an iPhone app, an Android app (rated Mature 17+ on Google Play) and a full web app, with 41 interface languages listed. Nomi has an iPhone app (English only) and a web app you can install as a PWA; its wiki says an Android app exists, but we could not load the Google Play listing to verify it.

Cancel where you subscribed. On Kindroid's web app, go to Profile, then Billing, and manage the standard subscription; Ultra and MAX are cancelled separately, and a subscription cannot move between iOS, Android and web until it runs out. On Nomi, use Profile, the Subscription tab, then Manage Subscription. Our cancellation guide covers the store routes.
