Nomi is the closest match that still has a free plan: 50 messages a day with no end date and no card. Paid plans give up to 10 Nomis and 10 group chats (Kindroid: 10 and 20), voice messages and calls, selfies and short videos made from album images. Customization runs through Backstory+ notes (Backstory, Inclination, Current Roleplay, Preferences, Desires, Boundaries and more) and image "anchors" for a consistent look, and Mind Map 2.0 lets you edit what each Nomi remembers.

Two practical wins for Kindroid users: Nomi's own voices and Custom Voices have unlimited use on paid plans instead of an audio-credit budget, and the yearly plan is $99.99 on the US App Store against Kindroid's $159.99 (both list $15.99 for a month). The losses: no video calls in its docs, no community character library, nude images are not permitted, sign-up only with Google or Apple, and no chat export. SpicyChat keeps a free tier with no published message cap: default models, unlimited character creation and 3 personas, with adult roleplay allowed for users 18 and over and group chats of 2 to 10 chatbots on the platform. Character creation is detailed, with a personality field of up to 5,000 characters, scenario, example dialogue and lorebooks.

The free tier is thin on memory, though: a 4,096-token context, replies of up to 180 tokens and no Memory Manager. Paid plans cost $5.95, $19.95 or $29.95 a month since September 8, 2026; voice (text-to-speech and custom voices) needs the $29.95 tier and there are no voice calls. If calls were your main Kindroid habit, Character.AI is the only app here with free voice: Character Voice reads replies aloud and Character Calls are two-way conversations on mobile and web, in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin "and more", with no published minute cap. You can give your own Characters a voice cloned from a 3 to 15 second clip, and messaging is unlimited on the free tier.

The limits are big for Kindroid users: adult content is banned for everyone, the free tier has ads, and the company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026, saying the platform will be wound down if no buyer keeps it running. Kindroid lets you pick between its own models; Janitor AI lets you bring any model. Its free built-in model, JLLM, handles unlimited chats, and API settings accept an external model through a proxy such as OpenRouter. On janitor+ ($12.99 a month or $99 a year) you also get 5x more context and the web-only Router, which bills third-party models per token. Adult content between consenting adult characters is allowed for users 18 and over.

For Kindroid users frustrated by stricter image rules in the mobile apps, Candy AI is a browser-only platform whose Premium plan lists "Generate 18+ Images" and "Generate 18+ Videos", plus Live Action video scenes. Its character builder covers looks, personality, voice, hobbies and relationship type, and voice messages and voice calls (beta) run on tokens.

From an EU connection the plan page showed €9.99 for the first month, then €13.99 a month, or €47.88 for 12 months; Premium includes unlimited text chat and 100 tokens a month, and top-up prices appear only after sign-in. The free account allows just 5 messages. There is no native app, refunds need a request within 24 hours with 20 tokens or fewer used, and the Terms let the operator train AI models on your chats. Replika trades Kindroid's depth for a lower barrier: its help center says text chat "will always be free", and you get a 3D avatar, an AR mode and a Meta Quest VR beta. Voice calls, the romantic relationship status and most customization need a subscription; the US App Store lists unlabelled entries from $7.99 a month and $49.99 a year.
