Janitor AI is the closest match for Character.AI's core use, browsing and building characters for roleplay, for free. Its free tier offers "unlimited chats with millions of bots" on the built-in JLLM model, and you can connect your own model in API settings. janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year and mainly adds 5x more context and faster replies.

Unlike Character.AI, Janitor AI allows adult content between consenting adult characters for users 18 and over, with a published list of banned categories and a "Limitless" or "Limited" tag on every bot. Creator tools include scenario, several opening messages, example dialogue, scripts and lorebooks. What you give up: voice and images, context beyond about 9,000 tokens on the free tier, and full content in the mobile apps (they start in a restricted mode); the UK, Australia and Brazil need a one-time k-ID age check. Talkie is the nearest thing to Character.AI under similar rules: a large, free, ad-supported library of user-made characters ("Talkies") on the web, Android and iPhone, plus a creator with image, video, audio and music tools. Its rules are even stricter: suggestive sexual content is prohibited too.

On iPhone, the official download link opens a listing called "Talkie Lab - AI Playground" from the same operator. The US App Store lists $9.99 for "1 Month", $24.99 for "1 Month Talkie+ Pro" and $49.99 for "1 Year", but Talkie does not say what each includes. SpicyChat is built for the adult roleplay Character.AI will never allow. Its FAQ says any chatbot can take part in NSFW roleplay, its download page claims more than 300,000 NSFW characters, and it imports Character.AI card files. The free tier has no published message cap and unlimited character creation, with a 4,096-token context and replies of up to 180 tokens.

Roleplay tools include group chats with 2 to 10 chatbots, lorebooks and, on paid plans, Memory Manager and Semantic Memory 2.0. Plans cost $5.95, $19.95 or $29.95 a month since a September 2026 increase. NSFW content needs a selfie or ID check in France, the UK, Italy, Australia and 26 US states, there is no iPhone app, and the Terms give SpicyChat broad rights over your chats. Character.AI's free voice calls are hard to match for free. Kindroid goes further on a paid plan: real-time voice calls, live video calls with an animated avatar, and custom voices you design or build from samples. It also has a Community tab of shared "Kins", group chats with up to 10 Kindroids, and a personality field of 2,000 characters (2,500 for subscribers).

Kindroid has had no free plan since October 1, 2026: after a one-time 50-message preview the account turns read-only. The US App Store lists $15.99 (monthly, inferred) or $159.99 a year, and calls draw on audio credits. NSFW and erotic roleplay are explicitly allowed in private chats but not in shared content. Nomi suits Character.AI users who kept one long story going and grew tired of characters forgetting things. Its Mind Map 2.0 shows what each Nomi remembers as a graph and a table you can edit, and an "Identity Core" keeps the personality steady. Character.AI's free tier, by comparison, gives you 15 pinned messages and keeps Facts memory for c.ai+.

Nomi is a companion app, not a character library: you create your own Nomis (up to 10, plus 10 group chats, on paid plans) and set the scene with Backstory+ notes. The free plan allows 50 messages a day; the US App Store lists $15.99 (monthly, inferred) or $99.99 a year. CrushOn.AI is a web platform for text roleplay with a big user-made library and a model picker: its own models plus third-party ones listed on its wiki, such as Claude, Gemini, GPT and DeepSeek. The free plan gives 100 message credits a month with unlimited use of Free Models and 8K memory, but free chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity.

Paid plans run from $5.99 a month (2,000 credits, 16K-memory models, group chat) to $199.99. Adult content is off by default; an Unfiltered switch allows sexual roleplay.
