What "Multiple Characters" Means in an AI Companion App

Apps use "multiple characters" for three different setups, and only the first is a group chat:

Group chat. Several AI characters talk with you in one conversation, taking turns or answering each other (Nomi, Kindroid, SpicyChat, CrushOn.AI).
Several separate companions. You keep more than one companion on an account, each in its own chat, with no shared conversation (Muah AI, Candy AI, Kupid AI and others).
Slots and limits. The number you may keep, often raised by a higher plan or a one-time purchase.

A fourth case is one character card that plays several roles: CrushOn.AI's advanced guides cover multi-character bots, and GirlfriendGPT tags such scenarios "Multiple". Kindroid also has Rooms, shared spaces where several users and AIs meet. The matrix below uses a column called Multiple characters, which means several companions on one account; group chat is listed separately in the table after it, and only where the research says so. We did not run group chats ourselves. Apps rank higher when a group chat is documented, its limits are published, and the free and paid split is clear. Apps with only separate companions come after. Facts are from official help centers, wikis, plan pages and store listings checked on October 20, 2026; user reports are labeled.

Nomi's wiki says paid accounts can hold up to 10 active Nomis and 10 active group chats. Group chats have an Auto-play mode that keeps the scene going between your messages, and each group chat has its own Backstory and Mind Map. Nomis can also draw images in group chats. More room costs credits: 25 for an extra group chat, 100 for an extra Nomi slot.

Several separate companions, no documented group chat

Muah AI: up to ten character slots, unlocked with XP levels, each with its own conversation, settings and gallery. Group chats with several AIs are not described.
Candy AI: paid users can create several girlfriends. Group chat appears only in an on-site testimonial, not on a feature page.
DreamGF: you can create several girls, and the roadmap (February 2024) mentions buying extra girlfriends with credits.
Kupid AI: 1 companion on Free, 4 on Pro and 8 on Ultra in the pricing table, but "as many as you want" on paid plans in the FAQ. Companions "don't share memory with each other".
Romantic AI: the FAQ says you can chat with several virtual girlfriends at once, in separate chats.
GirlfriendGPT: many characters and chats; group chat is not documented.

One companion, or not documented

Replika says it plainly: "Each account can only have one Replika", and a second account needs a different email and its own store account to subscribe. Paradot speaks only of one "AI Being". We found nothing on several companions or group chats for Janitor AI, Talkie, Chai, EVA AI or Anima.

How Group Chats Differ Between Apps

Who speaks. Nomi's Auto-play keeps a scene moving between your messages, CrushOn.AI lets you set a speaking order and @mention a character, and SpicyChat offers smart auto-responses on paid tiers. Kindroid's Rooms are a separate idea: shared spaces for several users and AIs.

Memory. Memory belongs to a companion or a chat, not to your account. Each Nomi group chat has its own Backstory and Mind Map, CrushOn.AI's group model has less memory than its Standard models, and Kupid AI says its companions do not share memory. A group is not a way to share one memory bank; see how companion memory works.

Cost model. Nomi sells slots with credits, Kindroid sells them as one-time purchases, CrushOn.AI gates group chat behind a subscription, and SpicyChat does not gate it in the pages we read. Our page on AI girlfriend app pricing compares plans.

Group Chat or Separate Companions?

General advice, not a ranking: choose by what you want to do.

A shared scene with a cast (a party, a crew, a family drama) needs a group chat. Check who controls the turns: Nomi's Auto-play, CrushOn.AI's speaking order and @mentions, or SpicyChat's smart auto-responses.
Different relationships (a friend, a partner, a mentor) work better as separate companions, because each has its own chat and personality. Muah AI, Candy AI, Kupid AI and Romantic AI fit here, and so do the group-chat apps.
A tight budget points to SpicyChat or Character.AI for the free side, and CrushOn.AI's Standard plan ($5.99 a month) as the cheapest subscription documented as required for group chat.

Before you pay, compare slot counts with the price: a slot cap that looks generous can still be expensive to extend, as Kindroid's and Nomi's add-ons show.

Free group chat: SpicyChat does not list group chat as paid-only. Character.AI's help pages do not say which plan includes it, and availability is unconfirmed.
Paid group chat: Nomi (any paid plan; $15.99 a month on the US App Store), Kindroid ($15.99 a month there, no free plan), CrushOn.AI (from $5.99 a month), Nastia AI (paid plan).

Limitations and Safety Notes

Quality. Reviewers say group roleplay degrades on Nomi (user reports). We cannot test this.
Cost. More characters means more slots to buy or tokens to spend; Kindroid's 4-slot pack is $11.49, Nomi's extra slot 100 credits.
Public groups. SpicyChat groups can be public, so keep private information out of them. Kindroid does not allow NSFW in Rooms listings.
Moderation. Every character in a group follows the app's content rules; see unfiltered AI chat.
