Quick answer
- Published free context sizes: SpicyChat 4,096 tokens, CrushOn.AI 8K and Janitor AI about 9K. Nomi, Character.AI and Replika do not publish a size.
- Most developed free memory system: Nomi (editable Mind Map 2.0, Identity Core). Its paid-only list in the wiki does not include memory, but the free plan allows 50 messages a day.
- Free pins: Character.AI gives 15 pinned messages (30 on lite and c.ai+); its Facts memory is c.ai+ only.
- Catches: CrushOn.AI deletes free chat history after 7 days of inactivity, and SpicyChat's Memory Manager starts at $5.95 a month.
- No free memory: Kindroid has had no free plan since October 1, 2026, and Candy AI stops at 5 messages.
"Memory" means different things on a free plan. Sometimes it is only the context window, the recent text the model reads with each reply. Sometimes it adds notes you write, pins, or an editable list of facts. By the rule of thumb in OpenAI's help center, a token is about three-quarters of a word, so 4K tokens is roughly 3,000 words and 8K roughly 6,000. As general advice, expect less usable history than that, because the reply and the character's own description share the window.
This page covers only what free users get. For the full feature view, including paid memory, see our ranking of AI companions with memory; for the mechanics, read how AI companion memory works and our entry on the context window. It is part of our free AI companion apps section.
How We Picked Free AI Companions With Memory
We did not create accounts or test recall, and we publish no scores. An app is ranked only if its documents describe memory on a free plan, or do not list memory as paid. Criteria:
- Documented memory on the free plan.
- Published size: tokens, pins or entries.
- Control: can you view, edit or pin what is kept?
- Persistence: deletion and inactivity rules that decide whether memory survives.
- Stability: messages per day and open caveats such as a pending company sale.

Nomi documents short-, medium- and long-term memory, an Identity Core and Mind Map 2.0, an interactive graph and table where you can edit what your Nomi remembers. Up to 50 entries per category are eligible for recall, up to 10 can be marked "high" priority, and each entry holds up to 10,000 characters. The free plan has no end date but allows only 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each.
Nomipedia lists what paid plans add: voice, group chats (each with its own Mind Map), up to 10 Nomis, 800-character messages, more daily selfies, video and credits. Memory is not on that list, so we treat it as not paid, though we could not test it. The wiki also says recall "is not perfect", and no context size is published. See the Nomi review.

2. Janitor AI

Janitor AI's free tier gives "unlimited chats with millions of bots" with a context of around 9,000 tokens on the built-in JLLM model; janitor+ ($12.99 a month) gives 5x more. Memory is that window plus a Chat Memory field you write yourself, and the help center says the model forgets the oldest text when the window fills. Scripts and lorebooks (beta) add triggered facts.
No automatic long-term memory is documented, and the docs do not say whether chats train JLLM. Adult rules and age checks are covered in our guide to free NSFW AI chat. See the Janitor AI review.

CrushOn.AI's pricing page lists 8K memory on the free plan, 200 historical messages per character, 50 recent chats and 4,000 characters pinned per chat (about 800 recommended per pin). Auto-Summarization turns older chat into long-term memory, with frequency set by tier, and Save Memories keeps up to 100 selected messages. We could not confirm how these two work on the free tier specifically.
The catch is explicit: "Chat History will be deleted after 7 days of inactivity". That undermines memory for anyone who chats weekly or less. Paid tiers raise memory to 16K (Standard, $5.99 a month) and 24K (Elite and Imperial), and CrushOn.AI's privacy policy says chats are used to train its models with no opt-out described. See the CrushOn.AI review.

4. Character.AI

Character.AI's Memory screen (May 2026) combines Story Memory with pinned messages: 15 pins on the free plan, 30 on (c.ai) lite and c.ai+. A Memory Usage bar shows how full the context is (a basic version on free), older context is compressed in the background, and the free plan includes a basic Lorebook. Facts, details captured automatically about you and the characters, are a c.ai+ feature. No context size is published, and an older help article admits characters "appear to forget things".
Messaging is unlimited on every plan, with ads and slow mode on free. The company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026, so memory built there may not last; see our news page. More in the Character.AI review.

5. Replika

Replika's help center describes a Memory tab that shows what your companion remembers; you can add, edit and delete entries, and a deeper layer draws on overall conversation history. Replika Ultra adds saved memories and shows which ones are in use. The app displays only the past four months of chat, but memories and diary entries remain. The company's own site says Replika 2.0 rebuilt its memory architecture (a marketing statement we could not check).
The help center says chatting "will always be free", the Terms call free use "limited access", and no message cap or memory size is published. Two 2026 store reviews describe a paywall mid-chat; these are user reports. One companion per account. See the Replika review.

SpicyChat publishes memory by tier: 4,096 tokens on free and Get A Taste, 8,192 on True Supporter and up to 32,768 on I'm All In, depending on the model. The free plan has no Memory Manager; that arrives with Get A Taste ($5.95 a month) and lets you add, edit, delete and pin memories of up to 250 characters each. Semantic Memory 2.0, which summarizes chats into memories automatically, starts at True Supporter ($19.95).
Free replies are capped at 180 tokens, and no message cap is published. See the SpicyChat review and plan guide.

Apps Without Free Memory You Can Count On
- Kindroid: its layered memory is documented, but cascaded memory is a subscriber feature and the free plan ended on October 1, 2026 (a one-time preview of 50 messages, then read-only). See the news page.
- Candy AI: memory is tied to the active chat, and the free account stops at 5 messages. Premium Plus lists "20 memory slots".
- Kupid AI: the free column says memory of the last 30 messages, but the free tier allows 15 messages (period unstated).
- Nastia AI and Talkie: both say characters remember you, with no size. Nastia's pages disagree ("up to 2 weeks" on one comparison page), and Talkie's FAQ says older conversations are forgotten.
- Muah AI, DreamGF, GirlfriendGPT, Romantic AI, Chai, EVA AI, Paradot and Anima: memory is either undocumented or marketed without free-tier numbers.
Limitations of Free Memory
- Inactivity and deletion: CrushOn.AI's 7-day rule can erase a free chat. On Candy AI and Kupid AI, resetting or deleting a chat clears its memory.
- Forgetting is normal: Nomi, Character.AI and Talkie all say their characters can forget. A bigger window helps long roleplay but is rarely free.
- Daily caps: Nomi's 50 messages a day limits how fast a memory builds.
- Privacy: a memory bank is a profile of you. Check what your app says about storage and training in our guide to whether apps store your chats, and how to export your chat history.
Tip
As general advice, write the facts that matter (names, boundaries, ongoing storylines) into the persona, backstory or pinned fields, so they are resent with every reply instead of relying on automatic recall. Our page on memory setup for AI characters shows how.
If memory is only one of your criteria, our best free AI girlfriend apps page compares free plans overall, and free AI girlfriend without signup covers options that need no account.
