Quick answer
- Most complete toolkit for adult characters: SpicyChat publishes field limits, lorebooks of up to 5,000 entries, private analytics and a monthly leaderboard that wins free subscriptions.
- Best written guide: Character.AI has an eleven-article Creator Guide and a 32,000-character Definition, but it bans adult content for everyone and the company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026.
- Documented payouts: CrushOn.AI's Creator Rewards and Talkie's revenue share for original content (Talkie is SFW only). Neither source names a rate.
- Private companions: Kindroid shares templates only from paid accounts, and Nomi has no public character library.
- Adult platforms with published creator rules ban characters who are minors. State your character's adult age in the text.
Almost every companion app lets you make a character. Far fewer let you publish one, see how it performs or get anything back for it. This list, part of our AI character creation section, is for people who build characters others will chat with, or who want one private character built with care. For the user-side comparison, see AI girlfriend apps with custom characters.
How We Picked
We publish no scores and did not build characters on these platforms. The order follows what each one documents, checked on October 20, 2026 in official help centers, wikis, terms and guidelines:
- Published fields and limits for each part of a character.
- Public sharing: visibility settings, a library, featuring.
- Creator programs: analytics, leaderboards, rewards, payouts.
- World-building tools you control: lorebooks, journals.
- Written content rules for public characters.
- Stability: a pending sale, app availability, price changes.

A Lorebook holds up to 5,000 entries of up to 2,000 characters, and public lorebooks are reviewed before they appear in Explore. Creator Analytics is a private dashboard. The Creator Guide adds a planning template, testing advice and a sharing chapter. Visibility is public, unlisted or private.
A Lorebook has been in beta since July 24, 2026, with creation open to c.ai+ subscribers first; one Lorebook can be linked to many Characters. The guide says most memory tools, such as pins, are controlled by the user. No pornographic content or nudity is allowed, and filtering "isn't a Definition dial you can turn". The company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026, so keep your own copy of every Definition. We found no payout program. See our Character.AI review and the Chapter 11 news page.

The help center says to put example dialogue in the Personality box and to stay under about 2,500 permanent tokens.
Advanced tools include custom prompts, scripts (beta) for triggers and lorebooks, custom CSS, scheduled releases and creator analytics. Creation is free and you can connect your own model. Adult content between consenting adult characters is allowed with the Limitless tag; listed categories are banned whatever the tag. We found no payout program. Kindroid takes a name, gender, avatar style and appearance description, a Personality of up to 2,000 characters (2,500 for subscribers) and a required greeting, then Response Directive, Key Memories, Example Message and keyphrase journal entries. A Kindroid can be shared as a template by code or link. The share carries the backstory fields, dynamism and avatar settings, but not long-term memory, journals or chat history.
Only active paid subscribers can create shares. Every 20 recreations earns 5 more share slots, and a new subscriber who arrives through your link earns a referral credit, exchangeable for 4 Kindroid slots, 100 selfies or 75,000 audio characters. Shares are moderated, and explicit sexual content is not allowed in them even though private use is unfiltered. There has been no free plan since October 1, 2026. See our Kindroid review.

CrushOn.AI's wiki describes Quick Start, where you fill in a few simple fields, and import of a character from another platform as JSON. The description works as permanent memory, and the wiki recommends about 1,500 tokens. Profile-card slots run from 10 on Free to 400 on Imperial. We could not capture the full field list.
Its Terms, revised on September 22, 2026, say users who upload characters can become Creators and receive tips and amounts tied to other users unlocking their content, including Paid Content bought with Diamonds. The platform may require identity, age and payee verification and sets eligibility, revenue share and payout methods in program rules, so no percentage appears. See our CrushOn.AI review.

"Create a Talkie" builds a persona with image, video, audio and music tools, and every AI setting is moderated before it goes live. The FAQ says creators can earn revenue shares if their content is original and copyright compliant, with income depending on user transactions, and original authors can request a yellow badge. No field list or limits are published.
Its rules are the strictest here: pornographic and violent content are prohibited, and the Community Guidelines also bar suggestive sexual undertones. The terms set the minimum age at 14 (16 in 18 listed countries). See our Talkie review.

Nomi is a companion builder, not a publishing platform. You choose a look, then write Backstory+ in nine sections: Backstory, Inclination, Current Roleplay, Your Appearance, Your Nomi's Appearance, Nicknames, Preferences, Desires and Boundaries. Mind Map 2.0 lets you edit memory entries of up to 10,000 characters.
We found no public character library, so there is nothing to publish and no creator program, and Backstory+ limits are not published. See our Nomi review and our guide to memory design for AI characters.
Also documented, with fewer details
- Candy AI and DreamGF: menu builders for looks and personality; DreamGF says public characters need manual approval. No field limits are published.
- GirlfriendGPT: Quick Create and Custom Create, public characters with tags and a content rating, and a Top Creators page.
- Muah AI: an editable Core Prompt, a community characters browser and card import; limits depend on membership.
- Replika: one companion per account, no library or sharing. Chai and EVA AI say characters can be private or shared but publish no field list.

Sharing and Creator Programs
Four kinds of reward exist:
- Analytics: SpicyChat's private dashboard (data from January 1, 2026) and Janitor AI's creator analytics.
- Prizes: SpicyChat's leaderboard gives the top 3 in each category its highest tier and ranks 4 to 10 the middle tier, free for the month.
- In-app credit: Kindroid's share slots and referral credits pay out in slots, selfies and audio, not money.
- Money: CrushOn.AI's Creator Rewards and Talkie's revenue share. CrushOn.AI says it may change the terms with notice.
Character.AI, Nomi and the menu-builder apps document no program.
Content Rules for Public Characters
A public character is judged by the platform's written rules. The ones that matter most to creators:
- Adult age: SpicyChat says every chatbot must be portrayed as an adult and asks you to state the age in the Personality if it is not evident. CrushOn.AI bars characters who are minors or whose age is not clearly over 18, including "aged-up" versions of characters first shown as minors. Janitor AI bans sexual content involving minors or minor-coded characters, and Kindroid bans sharing characters that depict minors. SpicyChat evaluates childlike demeanors individually, even for listed adults.
- Labels: SpicyChat requires explicit bots to be marked NSFW, and Janitor AI requires the Limitless tag on sexual or romantic characters. Kindroid keeps explicit material out of shares. Character.AI bans pornographic content and nudity, and Talkie also bars suggestive sexual content.
- Real people: SpicyChat bans bots based on real private or lesser-known people, and both SpicyChat and CrushOn.AI bar photorealistic or realistic images of individuals.
- Originality: SpicyChat asks that public chatbots be your own creation, and Talkie ties revenue to original, copyright-compliant content.
App stores push the same way. Apple's guideline 1.2 requires apps with user-generated content to filter objectionable material and offer reporting and blocking, and rule 1.2.1(a), added on November 13, 2025, asks creator apps to let users identify content above the app's age rating. Our news page on Apple and Google's tighter AI companion rules has the October 2026 changes.
How to Choose a Platform for Your Characters
- Adult characters for an audience: SpicyChat for tools, Janitor AI for a free start with your own model.
- SFW characters with the best guide: Character.AI, if you accept the sale risk.
- A private character you refine for months: Kindroid or Nomi, both paid.
- Possible earnings: CrushOn.AI or Talkie, after reading their current program terms.
Then start building: our guide to creating an AI character maps each step to these fields, and writing a character prompt covers the text.
FAQ
Which platform is best for creating AI characters?
There is no single best. SpicyChat documents the most creator tools for adult characters, Character.AI has the most thorough guide for SFW ones, and Janitor AI is the best-documented free option.
Can you make money creating AI characters?
CrushOn.AI's Terms describe Creator Rewards and Talkie's FAQ a revenue share for original content, but neither names a rate. SpicyChat and Kindroid pay in free subscriptions or in-app credit. We found no payout program elsewhere.
How long can an AI character description be?
Character.AI allows a Definition of up to 32,000 characters, SpicyChat a Personality of up to 5,000 and Kindroid 2,000 (2,500 for subscribers). Longer is not better: SpicyChat advises about 900 to 1,100 tokens for the whole character.
Can I keep my character private?
Yes on Character.AI and SpicyChat, which offer private visibility. Kindroid characters stay private unless you create a share.
Can I move a character to another platform?
SpicyChat imports Character.AI card files (JSON or PNG) and CrushOn.AI imports JSON. Field names differ, so check the result. See our glossary entry on the character card format.
