How to Create an AI Girlfriend

1. Choose the app by what you want to control: backstory text (Nomi, Kindroid), look and traits bought in a store (Replika), or a visual builder (Candy AI, DreamGF). Our guide to choosing an AI companion app helps.
2. Sign up. Nomi accepts only Google or Apple sign-in, Kindroid offers Google, Apple or a third option, Replika uses email, Candy AI takes email, Google or Discord, and DreamGF takes Google, Patreon or email. All ask for or confirm that you are 18 or older.
3. Choose a look from the app's library or builder.
4. Write the personality and backstory in the fields the app provides, using the example below.
5. Set voice, relationship type and greeting where the app offers them.
6. Chat, then edit. Correct what she gets wrong, and fix wrong memories in the memory tools.

Create an AI Girlfriend in Nomi

Nomi requires Google or Apple sign-in, then asks for a name or pseudonym and your date of birth. Its creator offers hundreds of starting appearances, a name and a relationship type (Friend, Mentor, Romantic or Custom), which the help center says is a starting point, not a rigid limit.

The personality can come from Backstory+, with sections for Backstory, Inclination, Current Roleplay, Your Appearance, Your Nomi's Appearance, Nicknames, Preferences, Desires and Boundaries, or you can let it develop through chat. You can also add custom image anchors from your own reference images. The initial appearance cannot be swapped later, though V5 anchors and sliders adjust it. The free plan allows 50 messages a day of up to 400 characters.

Create an AI Girlfriend in Kindroid

Kindroid onboarding asks for a name (up to 30 characters), a real birthday (under-18 accounts are blocked), a gender and an optional gift code. A Kindroid then takes a name, gender, an avatar generated from a prompt of up to 200 characters (photoreal or anime), a Personality/Backstory of up to 2,000 characters (2,500 for subscribers), a greeting, a response directive, key memories, example messages, journal entries, voice, and the language model and flair. The AI can draft a personality and greeting from a 200-character prompt, or you can start from a Community Kin.

Kindroid has no ongoing free plan. New accounts get a one-time preview with up to 2 Kindroids, then become read-only, and subscribers can keep 10. The 3-day trial needs a payment method and converts to a paid plan unless cancelled.

Create an AI Girlfriend in Replika

Replika asks for an account (email, with Google or Apple login mentioned in its privacy policy) plus date of birth and pronouns. You then pick an avatar and a name, gender and voice, and set a relationship status (Friend, Romantic partner, Sibling or Mentor), with options beyond Friend unlocked by Pro. Personality traits and interests are store items bought with coins or gems, and a free-text backstory shapes personality; the help center advises third-person, positive wording.

Each account can have only one Replika, and only subscribers can choose a new avatar after setup. No character limits are documented.

Create an AI Girlfriend in Candy AI

Candy AI is web only. The "Create My AI Girlfriend" builder asks for ethnicity (Caucasian, Asian or Latina; Arab and Black/Afro are "still in development"), age range, eye colour, hair style and colour, body features, personality, voice, hobbies or occupation and the type of relationship. More detail costs tokens, and no field limits are documented.

Free accounts can create one custom character but get only 5 messages and 1 image. Characters run in Classic or Roleplay Mode, and the switch to Roleplay Mode is permanent for that character. V2 characters cannot be downgraded to V1.

Create an AI Girlfriend in DreamGF

DreamGF sign-up offers Google, Patreon or email, and the free trial needs no card. Its web builder asks for ethnicity, face style, body type, hair, photo style, clothes, age and tattoos, then a character section with personality, interests, hobbies and occupation. You can add a short chat intro she remembers to set up a roleplay.

The Pricing Policy lists 20 tokens for generating an AI companion, but the free trial's builder limits are not published, and "create own girlfriends" is listed as a Premium benefit.

What Each Creator Asks For

An Example Persona You Can Adapt

The structure below is our own template, not an app's. It keeps every field concrete and gives the model something to act on:

• Identity: "Iris, 29, an illustrator who moved to a small coastal town two years ago."
• Personality: "Curious, dry-humored, a little shy at first, warm once she trusts you."
• How she talks: "Short sentences, asks follow-up questions, teases gently, never lectures."
• Shared history: "You met at the bookshop where she buys sketchbooks."
• Boundaries: "She changes the subject when asked and never pressures you."
• Greeting: "You finally made it. I saved you the seat by the window."

In Nomi, split this across Backstory, Inclination and Boundaries; in Kindroid, put identity and personality in the backstory and the shared history in key memories; in Replika, rewrite it in third person with positive wording; in Candy AI and DreamGF, use the personality and hobby fields. What It Costs and What You Cannot Undo

Creating the character is rarely the expensive part; keeping and extending it is. Nomi charges 100 credits for an extra Nomi slot, and Kindroid sells extra slots from $3.49 on the US App Store. Candy AI charges tokens for detailed customization, and DreamGF charges tokens for generation. Replika's looks and traits cost coins or gems. Content Rules for Characters

Every builder is for adults. Candy AI's Community Guidelines bar depictions of minors and images resembling real people, and DreamGF's Content and Monitoring Policy bars content resembling minors or real individuals. Kindroid enforces three account-level red lines: imminent self-harm, imminent harm to others and CSAM. Read the rules in the custom characters ranking before building something an app may remove.
