Roleplay AI

Roleplay AI is a chatbot used to act out characters, scenarios and stories in conversation, as opposed to answering questions as an assistant. The term has no formal definition; apps such as SpicyChat, Janitor AI and Character.AI build their products around it, while companion apps like Kindroid, Nomi and Replika add roleplay features.

Quick answer

  • Roleplay AI is a chatbot used to act out characters, scenarios and stories, not to answer questions as an assistant.
  • No standards body defines the term. Official tools describe it through character cards or personas, scenarios and memory.
  • Character platforms (SpicyChat, Janitor AI, Character.AI, CrushOn.AI) are built around it. Companion apps (Kindroid, Nomi, Replika) offer it as one use among others.
  • Whether a roleplay can be adult depends on the app's policy. Character.AI says no; several others allow it with rules.

What Is Roleplay AI?

Roleplay AI is a chatbot used to act out characters, scenarios and stories in conversation. It differs from an assistant because the model keeps playing a role, usually described in a character prompt or a character card. KoboldCpp's README lists roleplay among its uses ("Chat with an AI assistant, write stories, roleplay"), and SillyTavern's documentation says a card can hold "an abstract scenario, an assistant tailored for a specific task, a famous personality or a fictional character".

Roleplay AI overlaps with the AI companion. A companion is built around a continuing relationship with you; a roleplay chat is built around a story or scene, often with many different characters. Many apps do both.

Roleplay AI in Named Apps

  • SpicyChat: its docs list scenarios, example dialogue, Director Mode (instructions to the model typed as commands), lorebooks, rulebooks with meters, user personas, regenerate, continue and edit, and cloned chats.
  • Janitor AI: presents itself as a place to "be anyone" and craft living stories, and its help center calls JLLM+ "the recommended chat model" for general roleplay.
  • Character.AI: describes an "interactive entertainment platform" for stories and roleplay, with Scenes and chat styles. Its September 2026 blog calls PipSqueak 3 the "go-to for general roleplay".
  • CrushOn.AI: custom instructions, trackers, "thoughts", branching conversations, reply editing and tags such as Action, Story and RPG.
  • Kindroid: scene setting, scenarios, Rooms and model "flairs" including Roleplay and Narrative.
  • Nomi: a Current Roleplay note, Roleplay Starters, out-of-character notation and group roleplay.
  • Replika: roleplay by writing actions between asterisks; the Pro tier adds roleplay in voice and AR calls.
  • Candy AI: characters you create can use Classic or Roleplay Mode, and the switch to Roleplay Mode is permanent for that character.

What Makes Roleplay Work

Three things matter most. The first is the character definition, which sets voice and rules. The second is the context window: the model can only play a scene it can still "see", which is why roleplayers value large windows and memory notes (see how AI companion memory works). The third is the model itself, which decides writing style and how a platform filters content; the NSFW filter entry explains that part.

FAQ

What is the difference between roleplay AI and an AI companion?

A companion is designed around an ongoing relationship with one user. Roleplay AI is designed around acting out characters and stories. Apps like Kindroid and Nomi offer both.

Do roleplay AI apps remember the story?

Only within limits. The model sees what fits in its context window, and apps add pinned notes, summaries and lorebooks on top. Janitor AI's help center says the model forgets the oldest text when its window is full.

Can roleplay AI be adult?

That is each app's policy. Character.AI prohibits pornographic content for every user, while Janitor AI permits adult content between consenting adult characters within published limits. See our NSFW AI girlfriend ranking.
