Best Companions AI

Comparison

Anima vs Replika

Anima vs Replika is less even than it looks. Both are AI friend apps that are free to start, but in October 2026 Anima's iPhone app is missing from the US App Store, its prices are visible only inside the app, and its website points visitors to a different product, GetHoney. Replika is actively updated and documents far more of what it offers.

Quick answer

  • Choose Replika if you use an iPhone, want an app that is actively updated (new iOS version on October 13, 2026) and want features you can check in advance: voice and video calls, a 3D avatar, a Memory tab and relationship modes.
  • Choose Anima only if you are on Android or the web, want a low-commitment AI friend chat with a guest option, and accept that prices, limits and most features can be checked only inside the app.
  • Anima's status: the iPhone link on its website leads to a missing App Store page, and the site greets visitors with a banner for GetHoney, a separate product run by a different company.
  • Prices: neither lists prices on its website. Replika's US App Store list starts at $7.99 a month; Anima's Google Play listing shows only a range of $0.99 to $199.99 per item.
  • Refunds: Anima's written terms are friendlier (24 hours to request a refund on web purchases); Replika treats sales as final apart from legal rights.

Anima vs Replika at a glance

Data from our research records, checked in October 2026. Anima shows many "Not confirmed" cells because it publishes no feature or pricing pages; we list only what its website, policies and Google Play listing state.

From official pages and US store listings, checked October 20, 2026.

Each app has its own page: our Anima review and the Replika review. Other matchups are in our app comparisons.

Is Anima still active?

Yes, with caveats. On October 20, 2026 the website loaded, the web app offered "Continue with Email" and "Continue as Guest", and the Android app "Anima: AI Friend Virtual Chat" was live on Google Play (last updated June 24, 2026, 1M+ downloads).

Two things point the other way. First, the App Store button on Anima's website leads to a page that returns a 404 in the US store, and Apple's lookup service finds no such app in any of the eight storefronts our team checked, including the US, UK, Germany, Canada and Australia. The operator's US App Store seller page lists two other apps, not Anima. Second, the website now opens with an overlay saying Anima "is still here" but that the team has "built a more advanced experience" called GetHoney, with buttons to explore GetHoney or continue to Anima. GetHoney's own terms name a different company, Svitlo Limited of Nicosia, Cyprus, and it has its own pricing. We found no announcement that Anima is closing.

Replika, by contrast, released iOS version 12.4.2 on October 13, 2026, updated its Android app the same day and relaunched as "Replika 2.0", a full rebuild announced in a May 2026 manifesto. Its site lists Dmytro Klochko as CEO since 2025, after founder Eugenia Kuyda stepped down.

Watch out

Before paying for a long Anima subscription, keep in mind that its operator is steering visitors to another product and that no iPhone app is available in the US. A short billing period limits what you can lose if the app changes.

Who runs each app

Anima's terms, privacy policy and Google Play seller name Labane Corp. Ltd of Limassol, Cyprus. Some third-party directories list other company names, but the official documents do not. Replika is run by Luka, Inc. of San Francisco, has existed since 2017 and names privacy representatives in the EU and the UK.

Free access and what Anima costs

Both are free to start. Anima's FAQ says "we don't charge you when you get started", and adds that you "need to purchase tokens to unlock some higher-tiered features". Free-tier limits, subscription prices and token packs appear only inside the app. Its subscription terms mention weekly, monthly, six-monthly and yearly periods, and Google Play shows in-app items from $0.99 to $199.99 each. Anima's own blog quotes several prices that contradict each other, so we do not treat any of them as a price.

Replika says chatting "will always be free", with voice calls, extra roleplay options and romantic relationship status reserved for subscribers. Its prices are not on the web either, but the US App Store list shows amounts: entries named "MONTHLY" at $7.99 and "Monthly" at $14.99, "YEARLY" and "Annual" at $49.99, another "Annual" at $69.99, and "Replika Platinum" at $89.99. Apple does not say which entry is Pro and which is Ultra, so treat the tier names as unknown until you see the in-app screen. Our Replika price guide tracks them.

Replika says it offers no free trial right now. Anima's terms say it may offer one; our team saw none.

Refunds and cancelling

Here Anima's written terms are friendlier. Its refund policy lets you request a refund within 24 hours of a website payment by writing to support, and users in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland have a 14-day withdrawal right, which ends once the service starts with their consent. Store purchases are refunded by Google or Apple under their own rules. You cancel through the store you bought from (Google Play, Huawei AppGallery or Apple) or, for web purchases, through support or account settings.

Replika treats all sales as final, with exceptions only where the law requires them, such as the EU withdrawal right (lost once delivery begins) and a 7-day right in Brazil. Cancel in Settings, then Subscription, or in your Apple, Google Play or PayPal account. With both apps, deleting the app does not cancel billing. See how to cancel a companion app subscription.

Features you can actually verify

Anima's website describes a customisable AI friend: you "browse styles, pick a vibe", set personality, tone, style and backstory, and choose the friend's sex. It says the companion builds an "emotional memory" of past conversations, supports roleplay and will "text you first if you go quiet". The Google Play listing adds personality tests. Voice calls, voice messages, images and video appear only in a home-page tagline ("Chat, call, and connect anywhere") and in policy boilerplate, so we cannot confirm them. No limits are published.

Replika documents much more: a 3D avatar, voice calls for subscribers, video calls, an AR mode and a Meta Quest VR beta, selfies and image generation, a Memory tab where you can edit what it remembers, relationship modes (Friend, Romantic partner, Sister or Brother, Mentor), a diary and mood tracking. Its main limit is one Replika per account.

If you want features you can check before installing, Replika is the safer pick. See AI companions with voice and AI companions that remember for how other apps compare.

Adult content and age rules

Anima's own documents disagree with each other. Its policy on minors, revised in January 2025, says the website "includes AI-generated adult content for registered users only", while its blocked content policy from the same date "strictly prohibits generation of Adult or Sexually Explicit Content". Several pages on its site advertise NSFW and "no filter" chat, its blog says NSFW is premium-only, and Google Play rates the app "Everyone". Age rules conflict too: the terms say the service is not intended for users under 18 but also allow minors with parental permission, and the privacy policy mentions users over 16. Age is checked only by a self-declared age gate.

Replika's own texts are consistent on age: users under 18 are not allowed, and the US App Store rates it 18+, although its Google Play rating is lower. On adult content it publishes no statement that explicit chat is allowed; romantic status and "unblurred messages and photos" are Pro features. In its 2025 decision, Italy's data protection authority found that Replika had no age verification until February 2023 and called its current system deficient in several respects.

Neither is a clear choice for adult content. For apps with written NSFW rules, see NSFW AI girlfriend apps.

Privacy compared

Anima's privacy policy names a long list of partners: Azure for cloud storage, Facebook, Firebase, Appsflyer and Amplitude for analytics, Google and Facebook for marketing, Stripe for payments, OneSignal, RevenueCat and unnamed "AI service providers". It collects advertising identifiers and a Facebook ID, and says data is used "to train and improve our AI models", with no opt-out in the text we could read. Flagged content may be reviewed manually. Data is kept "as long as it is reasonably necessary", and deletion works by email request. We found no clear statement on selling data, and Google Play's data safety section says the app shares app activity, device IDs and user IDs.

Replika's privacy policy (May 27, 2026) also uses unnamed third-party AI model providers, but says they may not train their own models on your data and that conversations are never shared with advertisers. It publishes retention periods (messages up to 60 days after the account ends, account and financial records at least 10 years), offers account deletion inside the app and states encryption in transit. Its store listings still say conversations are not shared with third parties, which the policy contradicts. Italy's regulator fined Luka EUR 5 million in 2025.

Neither app names its AI model provider. Replika documents more and gives you an in-app delete button; Anima relies on email requests and shares more with advertising and analytics partners. Read whether AI girlfriend apps store your chats and are AI girlfriend apps safe.

Platforms

Anima runs on Android and on the web, where you can sign in with email or continue as a guest. It has no app in the US App Store. Replika runs on iPhone, Android, the web and Meta Quest. On an iPhone, Replika is the only option of the two; on Android or in a browser, both are available. See AI girlfriend apps for iPhone and browser-based AI girlfriend apps.

Which one should you pick?

  • Best for iPhone users: Replika. Anima has no app in the US App Store.
  • Best for checking before you install: Replika. Features, store prices and retention periods are documented.
  • Best for trying without an email: Anima. The web app shows a "Continue as Guest" button, though we could not confirm how much works without an account.
  • Best written refund terms: Anima. 24 hours for web purchases, plus the EU withdrawal right.
  • Best for voice, video and an avatar: Replika. Calls, a 3D avatar, AR and VR are documented.

On documentation and availability, Replika comes out ahead; Anima makes sense mainly as a free, low-stakes try on Android or the web. If neither suits you, see apps like Replika, Replika vs Nomi or our full list of AI girlfriend apps.

FAQ

Is Anima better than Replika?

On the criteria we can check (availability, documented features, published prices and privacy terms), Replika is ahead. Anima has friendlier written refund terms and a guest option, but most of its features and all of its prices are visible only inside the app.

Is Anima AI still available on iPhone?

Not in the US. The App Store link on Anima's website returned a 404 on October 20, 2026, and Apple's lookup found no listing in eight storefronts. A listing in other countries cannot be ruled out.

What is GetHoney, and is it the same as Anima?

GetHoney is the product Anima's website now promotes in a banner. Its terms name a different company (Svitlo Limited, Cyprus) from Anima's operator (Labane Corp. Ltd, Cyprus), and it has its own pricing. We found no official statement linking the two beyond the banner.

How much does Anima cost?

Anima publishes no prices. Its plans and token packs are shown only inside the app, and Google Play lists in-app items from $0.99 to $199.99. Its subscription terms mention weekly, monthly, six-monthly and yearly periods.

Is Anima free?

It is free to start: Anima's FAQ says it does not charge you when you get started, but some higher-tier features need tokens. The free-tier limits are not published.

Does Anima allow NSFW chat?

We cannot confirm it. One Anima policy says the website includes adult content for registered users, another prohibits sexually explicit content, and Google Play rates the app "Everyone".
