Free vs Paid AI Girlfriend Apps: What Free Plans Really Include

Quick answer

Free access is the norm: 15 of the 19 apps we track offer it. Kindroid is the exception since October 1, 2026: new accounts get a one-time 50-message preview.
Limits vary widely: Character.AI and Janitor AI offer unlimited free messaging, Nomi 50 messages a day and Candy AI 5 messages in total. Many apps publish no number at all.
What paying usually adds: more or unlimited messages, a bigger memory, voice, images, no ads and no queue. Paid plans start at $4.99 a month (Character.AI's lite plan).
What paying does not change: content rules. No plan unlocks adult content on Character.AI, Talkie or Chai, or nude images on Nomi and Janitor AI.
Before paying: use the free tier first and start monthly. Nearly every app treats payments as final.

Five kinds of free plan

"Free" covers very different deals. Going by what the apps themselves publish, they fall into five groups:

Unlimited chat, paid extras: Character.AI ("free and unlimited messaging for ALL users", with ads), Janitor AI ("Unlimited chats with millions of bots"), SpicyChat (no published cap), CrushOn.AI (unlimited Free Models plus 100 credits a month for better ones) and Replika (chat "will always be free", though its Terms call free use "limited access").
A daily allowance: Nomi (50 messages a day), Nastia AI (a daily token allowance it does not quantify) and DreamGF (a Daily Claim Bonus of 10 to 50 messages a day).
A small taster: Candy AI (5 messages, 1 character, 1 image), Kupid AI (15 messages, period not stated), GirlfriendGPT (its Terms give "10 to 20 messages in total" as an example) and Muah AI (a no-login demo that asks you to sign up after a set number of messages).
Free, limits unpublished: Talkie and Chai (both ad-supported), EVA AI, Romantic AI, Paradot and Anima.
No free plan: Kindroid, since October 1, 2026. After its one-time preview the account turns read-only until you subscribe or start a 3-day trial, which needs a payment method.

An unlimited free tier is not automatically the best one: Character.AI shows banner and interstitial ads and slows free users at busy times, and SpicyChat lists "Skip The Waiting Lines" as a paid feature. Our ranking of the best free AI girlfriend apps weighs these trade-offs app by app.

The first table shows whether each app has a free plan and whether a feature exists at all. A "Yes" under voice, images or NSFW means some plan offers it, not that it is free.

Free vs paid AI girlfriend apps: what paying adds

More messages, faster replies

Capped apps lift the cap: Candy AI, Kupid AI, DreamGF and Nastia AI promise unlimited messages on paid plans, Nomi doubles message length to 800 characters, and CrushOn.AI's paid tiers range from 2,000 to 125,000 message credits a month. Uncapped apps sell speed and quality instead: Character.AI's c.ai+ skips waiting rooms and unlocks its premium chat styles, Janitor's janitor+ promises priority replies, and SpicyChat's top tier adds a priority queue.

A bigger memory

Memory is one of the clearest paid upgrades. Janitor's janitor+ gives five times the free context; SpicyChat goes from 4,096 tokens to 8,192 and up to 32,768, with its Memory Manager and automatic Semantic Memory only on paid tiers; Character.AI doubles memory pins to 30 and keeps automatic Facts for c.ai+; Kupid AI remembers the last 30 messages on free, 100 on Pro and everything on Ultra. Voice

Voice is mostly paid. Replika's voice calls, Nomi's voice messages and calls, Kindroid's calls and SpicyChat's text-to-speech (top tier only) all need a subscription, and Candy AI and DreamGF charge tokens for voice. Character.AI is the main exception: its voice replies and calls are free for everyone. See free AI girlfriend apps with voice.

Images and video

Pictures are almost never free in quantity. Candy AI gives one free image, Character.AI marks image features "Limited" on free, Nomi gives paid users more daily selfie requests, Kupid AI has no photos on free and 25 a week on Pro, and SpicyChat's in-chat images start at its $19.95 tier. Relationship and character features

Some apps put the relationship itself behind the paywall. Replika's Romantic partner, Sister or Brother and Mentor statuses are Pro features (Friend is free); Nomi's group chats and video need a plan; SpicyChat raises your personas from 3 to 10, 50 or 100; Candy AI and Kupid AI let free users create one character.

No ads

Ads pay for several free tiers: Character.AI, Talkie and Chai show them to free users, and ad-free chat is a paid feature on SpicyChat and c.ai+.

What a subscription does not change

Content rules: Character.AI says pornographic content "will not be supported at any point in the future", on any plan. Talkie bans explicit and even suggestive sexual content, Chai's models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, and EVA AI's current Terms forbid it. Nomi does not permit nude images (its image rules are looser on the paid or age-verified web version), and Janitor AI bans nude images on every plan.
Age checks: SpicyChat's selfie or ID check for NSFW content in listed regions applies whatever you pay, and a c.ai+ subscription does not bypass Character.AI's age assurance. Kindroid is the exception: a payment method on file counts as age verification there.

Credits and tokens on top of the subscription

A subscription is often not the whole bill. Many apps sell a second currency, and some of them sell it only to subscribers:

Candy AI: Premium includes 100 tokens a month (330 on Premium Plus); images, video and voice use tokens, and top-up prices appear only after sign-in.
Nomi: credits for extra selfies, videos and companion slots, from $4.99 for 40 to $99.99 for 1,800; a subscription is required to buy them.
Kindroid: selfie credits ($6.99 for 50), audio credits ($14.99 for 500,000) and slots; a call costs 400 audio credits a minute plus voice charges.
DreamGF: 10 tokens per image, 3 per voice message and 7 per minute of voice call.
Character.AI: Charms packs from $0.99 to $99.99 for extra images, skipping slow mode or an ad-free pass.
Janitor AI: a dollar wallet for third-party models through the Router, for janitor+ subscribers.
Others: Replika's gems buy cosmetics only; Romantic AI's Hearts pay for gifts, photos and audio; EVA AI's Neurons unlock romantic messages and gifts; Chai's Pieces are sold without an official description of what they buy. SpicyChat sells no credit packs.

Trials, first-month prices and price rises

True free trials of paid plans are rare. Kindroid offers a 3-day premium trial that needs a payment method and converts to a subscription unless you cancel in time; Kindroid emails a reminder a day before. Replika says plainly: "Right now, we don't offer a free trial." DreamGF calls its free account a "free trial" (no card needed).

Watch first-period prices. Candy AI charges €9.99 for the first month, then €13.99; DreamGF advertises $12.99 for the first month, then $25.98. Prices can also rise mid-subscription: SpicyChat raised every tier on September 8, 2026, but lets existing subscribers keep their old price while their plan stays active and unchanged. Character.AI's Terms promise at least 30 days' notice of an increase, and Janitor applies price changes from the next billing cycle.

Free plans can shrink

A free tier is a business decision, and several changed in the past year:

Kindroid retired its free Lite model and unlimited free messaging on October 1, 2026 (see our Kindroid free plan news).
Chai now says "In some regions, use of the service requires a paid subscription". Australia's eSafety Commissioner reported in March 2026 that Chai had restricted free access to chat.
Character.AI acknowledged in April 2026 that it had added usage limits on some features and more ads for free users, and it is now in a Chapter 11 sale.
Replika, Paradot and Romantic AI keep the right in their Terms to deny free use at their discretion.

When free is enough, and when to pay

To judge a personality or writing style: any free tier works, though five messages (Candy AI) shows very little.
For casual daily chat: Character.AI, Janitor AI and SpicyChat have no published caps, and Nomi's 50 messages a day suit a short daily check-in.
For voice: Character.AI is free; nearly everywhere else you pay.
For long roleplay: paying for context and memory makes a real difference on Janitor AI and SpicyChat.

When you do pay, start with a monthly plan, cancel in the same place you paid, and assume no refund: Replika, Kindroid, Nomi, Janitor AI, Character.AI and most others treat payments as final, SpicyChat refuses refunds once your login has been used, and Candy AI allows them only within 24 hours with 20 tokens or fewer used.
